When Playboys Ruled the World (Barry Sheene and James Hunt)

They were the sports stars who defined an era, the daredevil bravery they employed on the track taking them to the very top of world motorsport, and their hell-raising antics keeping them on the front and back pages of the international press.

ITV Sport has produced a new documentary looking at the lives of 1970s motor racing legends Barry Sheene and James Hunt – and it will be shown tonight. When Playboys Ruled the World examines the close relationship between the twoworld champions who, despite their different disciplines and backgrounds, became like brothers.

F1 star Hunt, who won the 1976 world championship, and Sheene, who claimed motorcycling world title glory that same year and the next, were crowd favourites and national heroes. As famous for the party lifestyle they led away from the track as their achievements on it, they embraced the playboy tag given to them.

When Playboys Ruled the World contrasts public and media attitudes towards the private lives of Sheene and Hunt in comparison with the heavily-scrutinised lifestyles of today’s multi-million pound sports stars.

Produced by the team behind ITV Sport’s Grierson-nominated documentary Clough, When Playboys Ruled the World mixes original interviews with Hunt and Sheene with exceptional archive footage and new opinion from friends, family members and industry experts. Contributors include Barry’s widow Stephanie Sheene, James brother David Hunt, Sir Stirling Moss, Max Mosley, Murray Walker, Max Clifford and Kelvin MacKenzie.

James Hunt and Barry Sheene were the last of a generation whose lifestyles, as much as their huge success on the track, made them sporting heroes, remarked ITV Controller of Sport, Niall Sloane. This new documentary tells the fascinating story of two ofgreatest motorsport champions, and looks at a way of life and a friendship which probably would not exist in the modern sporting and media world.

Massive New Google Search Engine Algorithm: So Long SEO

At SXSW 2012 Google discussed its plans for a new search engine algorithm to essentially break the barrier between big name sites & home run blogs, and the order they display in your Google Search results.

Search engines work based off indexing keywords. A technique used on all websites, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), is a method in which words, phrases and links are strategically placed in order to be better optimised for a search engine (this may be intentional or not). The better optimised a page, the higher in the search results it will appear and the more traffic it will generate.

It’s obvious when a page has been over SEO’ed: the same keywords (which would obviously be searched for) crop up time and time again. Large sites will even employ dedicated staff to perform SEO in a bid against their competitors to bring in more traffic.

In the upcoming months, Google’s plan is to rank websites more ‘realistically’. Boosting those sites with quality, original content towards the top of results and useless, SEO infested spam out of view.

Or as Matt Cutts, head of the webspam team at Google, puts it:

What about the people optimizing really hard and doing a lot of SEO. We don’t normally pre-announce changes but there is something we are working in the last few months and hope to release it in the next months or few weeks. We are trying to level the playing field a bit. All those people doing, for lack of a better word, over optimization or overly SEO – versus those making great content and great site. We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect. We have several engineers on my team working on this right now.

This is quite an exciting change, in theory it may wipe out SEO all together. A ‘level playing field’ Google should be far more interesting and useful, then one ruled by wealthy SEO fueled sites and spam. Matt Cutts will be speaking again at the ‘You&A With Matt’, Search Marketing Expo, Seattle.

Light Beam Art by Chris Fraser

Chris Fraser  practices the age old trick of camera obscura to manipulate light entering a dark room to create light beam art. The sharp and crisp lines of light drawn in various directions across the room appear to be the work of a laser. However the rays of light are natural and a result of stragegically placed holes in the walls and ceiling of the dark enclosed space.
