Nymi by Bionym

img-band-stack Bionym_Nymi_black_top__3_ nexusae0_Nymi1_thumb bionym-nymi

Business Insider Article –

Toronto-based startup Bionym launched a wristband that will unlock your devices based on your heartbeat.

Heartbeats, like fingerprints, are unique to every individual. But Bionym thinks lifting a finger is too labor intensive. Instead, your device should know who you are automatically.

Wear the wristband, called Nymi, and an embedded electrocardiogram sensor recognizes your heartwaves and auto-authenticates all of your devices.  No more memorizing passwords because you are the password.

The wristband just launched for pre-order at $79 (though the price will jump to $99 after the first 25,000 devices get snatched up).

Nymi also touts both a proximity sensor and a motion detector, and its promotional video explores the realm of possibilities: you could pop your car’s trunk with the flick of a wrist, pay for coffee without reaching for your wallet, or open hotel room doors simply by standing in front of them.

“We don’t view this as just a product to unlock your devices, smartphones, etc.,” CEO Karl Martin told TechCrunch. “Those are security applications. We’re looking beyond that to smart environments. How do we enable hyper-personalized experience?”

Bionym was founded in 2011 and recently raised a $1.4 million seed round of financing.

Nymi promises to open source its API, so the possibilities, from gaming to banking, could as vast as developer creativity.  What remains to be seen, however, is if anyone will actually want to wear one.

Korea Will Soon Be Home To The World’s First ‘Invisible’ Skyscraper

The world will soon have its first “invisible” skyscraper.

There’s no construction date yet for the planned 1,476-foot tower, called Tower Infinity. But its architects have just been granted a construction permit to begin building outside of Seoul, South Korea near Incheon International Airport.

The visionaries behind the project, GDS Architects, will make the tower appear “invisible” using an LED facade system with optical cameras to display what’s directly behind the building. When turned on, the “reflective skin” of the building will give the illusion that Tower Infinity is blending in with the skyline.

The building’s projections may also be used for broadcasting special events, or for advertising purposes, according to GDS Architects.

The tower itself has an impressive profile, with a main spire flanked on either side by two separate building wings. Tower Infinity will be used primarily for entertainment and leisure purposes, and is set to include a 4D theater, restaurants, a water park, landscaped gardens, and the third-highest observation deck in the world.

“Instead of symbolizing prominence as another of the world’s tallest and best towers, our solution aims to provide the World’s first invisible tower showcasing innovative Korean technology while encouraging a more Global narrative in the process,” Charles Wee, AIA, GDS Design Principal said in the press release. “We look forward to providing Korea and the world with a completely new model for what it means to be an observation tower.”

MOONBOT studios Office Tour from Moonbot Studios on Vimeo.

Created in collaboration with Chipotle Mexican Grill, “The Scarecrow” is an arcade-style adventure game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and a companion animated short film. Both pieces depict a scarecrow’s journey to bring wholesome food back to the people by providing an alternative to the processed food that dominates his world. The film’s soundtrack is a re-interpretation of “Pure Imagination,” performed by Fiona Apple.

The film is set in a dystopian fantasy world where all food production is controlled by a fictional industrial giant Crow Foods. Scarecrows have been displaced from their traditional role of protecting food and are now servants to the crows and their evil plans to dominate the food system. Dreaming of something better, a lone scarecrow sets out to provide an alternative to the unsustainable processed food from the factory. In the game, players will accompany the Scarecrow on his journey through four levels and deliver fresh food to the City of Plenty’s citizens.

Tomos Classic XL Moped

Tomos-Classic-XL-Moped-11 Tomos-Classic-XL-Moped-12

The moped is back.  If you’ve been following along, however, it never really went anywhere in the first place.  For many years, the mopeds of the 1970s and 80s have been faithfully maintained and driven by a cult of small-motor enthusiasts throughout the world.  Today, one of the most revered brands in vintage mopeds has released a new moped– for the first time in 30 years.  Tomos is back, and has revealed a new moped in a limited run to its UK adherents– the Tomos Classic XL Moped.

The new Tomos Classic XL Moped is a compact pedal-start moped with a 49cc engine and a 27 mph top-end.  While this model is for sale only in the UK at present, those numbers translate quite well to the United States.  Reason being, a two-wheeled vehicle with less than 50ccs of displacement (and a ~25mph top end) doesn’t require a motorcycle license in most states.  Anyone can hop aboard and pilot their way through the city streets of downtown USA without additional paperwork.  This is one of several reasons a moped like this is so attractive to young people in modern cities.

A second reason the Tomos Classic XL moped is so attractive is its efficiency.  This low-displacement engine can get over 100 miles to a gallon for the right driver.  It barely sips fuel, using what equates to a lawn mower engine to cruise to up to 25 mph.  A third reason these mopeds are so adored by the Moped Army (which is a real thing) is how easy they are to maintain.  Anecdotally, Tomos mopeds are often considered the easiest to maintain, to modify and to upgrade.  Bikes like the venerable Puch Maxi of the 1970s (we have one in our garage) are a close second, but few bikes are as easy to maintain as a Tomos.  Those who are completely ignorant of engines and vehicle maintenance can get a quick handle of how to operate and maintain a moped like this.

The Tomos Classic XL Moped is available in a limited run in the UK for around $2,150 after conversion to USD.  There’s no news on a US arrival yet, but the sheer number of Tomos riders in the US might force their hand.  For those who want cheap, easy and efficient transportation in the modern city, this is a brilliant way to go.  For moped fans like us, it is very exciting news.

The line will also be available through the The Hundreds Online Shop beginning Monday, September 23rd, 2013.

“We all wanted to do a project that was more than just some decals placed on a stock BMX bike. This is why we choose to create a custom made Shadow frame that is limited to just this project and will never be produced again. We choose to do a 20″ BMX bike rather than a 24″ or 26″ as this represents true BMX and we didn’t want this project to be a toy, this bike can be taken out of the box and is ready to shred by a top rider or a causal fan, but its for sure a real machine for BMX. This is a important point as this shows the craftsmanship ship, love and attention to detail put into this project.” -Ron Bonner, The Shadow Conspiracy

The limited edition The Hundreds X The Shadow Conspiracy collection encompasses a custom designed 20″ Shadow BMX bike, an accompanying 13-piece bicycle Shadow multi tool, a vintage-inspired BMX jersey, and a dual-branded graphic tee and a snapback paying homage to this long-anticipated collaboration that’s been a decade in the works. The capsule is a meld of classic and contemporary BMX culture, Hot rod culture, with high end craftsmanship.

Jon Buscemi of BUSCEMI® Speaks About the Brand’s Influences and Founding Gourmet Footwear

jon-buscemi-of-buscemi-speaks-about-the-brands-influences-and-founding-gourmet-footwear-1

Tell us about your new project, BUSCEMI®.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about the project is necessity. The phrase “lifestyle brand” is thrown around so much these days but when you get down to it that is exactly what I am creating. I am setting out to make things that I will be utilizing on the daily, products that enhance the daily protocol. For example, I am producing a calf-tanned leather coffee sleeve to be used for that morning cappacino…things like this. Overall the format with is obnoxiously high quality consumer products.

What was your motivation for starting BUSCEMI®?

Starting a eponymous brand is a daunting task and the motivation is fear for the most part. Fear that what you really want to design or create may not ever make it into the world. Ego and arrogance play a part as well but more importantly confidence in the products that have been sitting in notepads, brain dumps or napkins for years. Lastly, and I’ve always said this, I was raised in NY during the graffiti era and the key or goal in that game was to go all-city, I conduct my business in accordance to that philosophy.

You were an original founder of the footwear brand, Gourmet. What is your current relationship with the brand?

I am still affiliated to Gourmet and retain my ownership but will be focusing on other projects including BUSCEMI®

How has your experiences with Gourmet helped better prepare you for the future?

Other than my family and friends, founding a brand like Gourmet has been the biggest gift ever granted. I feel like I have a PhD now. We started Gourmet with a dollar and a dream and the experience is, at risk of being clique, priceless. Lawsuits, failures, wins, global press, traveling the world, new relationships, old relationships enhanced etc….I’m very lucky.

The name is motivation in itself to get behind. It’s your last name, for anyone it holds huge significance. My family means everything and its a homage to them. My cousin Steve having huge success in the acting world has nailed the name into minds worldwide and now I have the same opportunity in a different world.

Who or what are your major influences behind the brand?

This is a question or answer actually that can take days to answer. The main influence are my peers. I want to make products that can influence my friends and family’s daily operations. When it comes to personal influences the short list are brands/ people like Asprey, Valextra, Poltrana Frau, Versace, John Lobb, Loro Piana and Larry Leight, Damon Way, Yves St. Laurent for starters. The #1 influence from now and always in Ralph “Lipshitz” Lauren. For my first collection I there is a homage to him. I’m producing a neck tie in his honor. If he started with neck ties will I.

When can we expect to see the brand’s first product?

The products will launch a handful of retailers in the US and on www.jonbuscemi.com on August 1st

Absolutely. GREATS®. Myself and Ryan Babenzien (K-Swiss/ Boast fame) came up with an idea in mid-2007 to build a destination site where urban, fashion-forward men can find footwear designed with classic style in mind and at the highest quality while maintaining a value price. We achieved the goal. Enter GreatsBrand.com. The goal is to disrupt the men’s footwear industry by creating desirable footwear that will only be available online, eliminating inefficient development cycles and retaining a higher margin than traditional footwear companies. Since Greats is exclusively online, we can design, develop, market, and sell market leading styles that stand out by being closer to the latest trends. Our fashion credo is simple and straight-forward: we will identify the latest fashion trends in men’s shoes and bring them to the customers faster than retail brands. We will be focused on the classic men’s footwear market, including lifestyle, urban, action sports & high-end fashion. All at a price that is unbeatable. Greats will be, the UNIQLO or Warby Parker of men’s footwear: classic, premium quality at a value price.

Any last thoughts?

Stay tuned as always and follow all further developments on IG at #jonbuscemi

A Redesign of Nike’s London HQ

a-redesign-of-nikes-london-hq-0 nike-uk-headquarters-newly-redesigned-by-rosie-lee-01-570x508

While Nike‘s sprawling Beaverton campus represents a pinnacle of sorts for the contemporary and modern workplace, the sportswear giant’s London digs look to be on par with that of the American HQ thanks to a recently completed redesign at the hands of London-based hybrid creative agency Rosie Lee. Tasked with updating Nike’s London headquarters, Rosie Lee drew inspiration from the brand’s timeless designs for the facelift. The result is a bevy of individual product-inspired spaces across the HQ’s three floors as everything from Spike Lee’s Mars Blackmon to the FuelBand and iconic footwear silhouettes are referenced throughout the colorful, collaborative environment.

I Am Street Fighter: 25th Anniversary Documentary

street-fighter street-fighter-2-1024x576 streetfighter2_031850055898_640x360 sf25ac

TECH2 Article –

It’s been 25 years since the fighting game genre was more-or-less codified by Street Figther, and to commemorate the occasion, Capcom teamed up with gaming video group Area 5 to make a documentary. It’s titled I Am Street Fighter – 25th Anniversary Documentary.

The documentary is essentially a love letter to all things Street Fighter. It goes in-depth into the history of the franchise and even has fans of the games, such as Clarence Lim, collector and cosplayer, talk about their childhood experiences with Street Fighter 2. The documentary covers fans and developers from all sides of Street Fighter, including art designers who were responsible for Street Fighter 2 HD Remix as well as the original sound director for Street Fighter 2.

Over the years, there have been quite a large number of mainline Street Fighter games. The number goes even higher when you start counting the Vs and X games, such as SNK vs Capcom, Marvel vs Capcom or Street Fighter X Tekken.
