NASA’s Rover Curiosity Lands on Mars

CNN News Article –

(CNN) — NASA’s $2.6 billion rover, Curiosity, carried out a challenging landing on Mars early Monday after traveling hundreds of millions of miles through space in order to explore the Red Planet.

The SUV-sized Curiosity made its dramatic arrival on Martian terrain in a spectacle popularly known as the “seven minutes of terror.”

This jaw-dropping landing process, involving a sky crane and the world’s largest supersonic parachute, allowed the spacecraft carrying Curiosity to target the landing area that scientists had meticulously chosen.

The mission control in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California burst into cheers as the rover touched down. Team members hugged and high-fived one another as Curiosity beamed back the first pictures from the planet, some shed tears.

“Rationally I know it was supposed to work all along, but emotionally it always seemed completely crazy,” said James Wray, assistant professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, who is affiliated with the Curiosity science team of Curiosity. “So to see all those steps being ticked off and actually working, it’s a huge relief.”

The spacecraft had been traveling away from Earth since November 26 on a journey of approximately 352 million miles (567 million kilometers), according to NASA.

The vehicle, which will be controlled from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has a full suite of sophisticated tools for exploring Mars. They include 17 cameras, a laser that can survey the composition of rocks from a distance and instruments that can analyze samples from soil or rocks.

The aim of its work is “to assess whether Mars ever had an environment able to support small life forms,” NASA says.

If all goes according to plan, Curiosity’s first stop will be Gale Crater, which may have once contained a lake. After at least a year, the rover will arrive at Mount Sharp, in the center of the crater. The rover will drive up the mountain examining layers of sediment. This process is like looking at a historical record because each layer represents an era of the planet’s history, scientists say.

The phenomenon of sedimentary layers is remarkably similar to what is seen on Earth, in California’s Death Valley or in Montana’s Glacier National Park, says John Grotzinger, chief scientist of the Mars Science Laboratory mission.

Rocks and minerals found on Earth are different than on Mars, but the idea of a mountain made of layers is familiar to scientists. Unlike on Earth, however, Mars has no plate tectonics, so the Martian layers are flat and not disrupted as they would be on Earth. That also means that Mount Sharp was formed in a different way than how mountains are created on Earth — no one knows how.

Images: Exploring Mars

In these layers, scientists are looking for organic molecules, which are necessary to create life. But even if Curiosity finds them, that’s not proof that life existed — after all, these molecules are found in bus exhaust and meteorites, too, says Steve Squyres, part of the Mars Science Laboratory science team.

If there aren’t any organics, that may suggest there’s something on the planet destroying these molecules, said Wray, of Georgia Tech. But if Curiosity detects them, Wray said, that might help scientists move from asking, “Was Mars ever habitable?” to “Did Mars actually host life?”

Curiosity’s mission is also significant in an era when NASA’s budgets are shrinking and China is becoming more ambitious in its space exploration program.

“I feel like it’s a signal that we have the capability to do big and exciting things in the future.” said Carol Paty, assistant professor at Georgia Tech’s School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. “You can’t not be excited.”

Liquid water is not something scientists expect to be apparent on Mars because the planet is so cold and dry, Squyres said. If the planet does harbor liquid water today, it would have to be deep below the surface, perhaps peeking out in a few special places, but not likely to be seen by Curiosity, Squyres said.

Rover to search for clues to life on Mars

It’s hard to know how long ago liquid water would have been there because there’s no mechanism to date the rocks that rovers find on Mars, Squyres said.

Evidence from the spacecraft NASA has sent to Mars so far suggests that the “warm and wet” period on Mars lasted for the first billion years of the planet’s history.

“In order to create life, you need both the right environmental conditions — which includes liquid water — and you need the building blocks from which life is built, which includes organics,” Squyres said. The Mars Science Laboratory is a precursor mission to sharper technology that could do life detection, Grotzinger said.

There aren’t specific molecules that scientists are looking for with Curiosity. The attitude is: “Let’s go to an interesting place with good tools and find out what’s there,” Squyres said.

Curiosity is supposed to last for two years on Mars, but it may operate longer — after all, Spirit and Opportunity, which arrived on Mars in 2004, were each only supposed to last 90 Martian days. Spirit stopped communicating with NASA in 2010 after getting stuck in sand, and Opportunity is still going.

“You take what Mars gives you,” said Squyres, also the lead scientist on the Mars Exploration Rover Mission, which includes Spirit and Opportunity. “If we knew what we were going to find, it wouldn’t be this much fun.”

#adidasunderground: The Chemical Brothers’ (DON’T THINK) Live Film Experience

On August 3rd in the Shoreditch area of London, the transformed #adidasunderground space played host to arguably one of the most energetic and talked about events thus far in its ongoing resume of events. The space played host to an incredibly immersive and fully experiential showing of The Chemical Brothers’ DON’T THINK film. The film, which was originally captured in last year at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival, was captured on an intricate amalgam of over 21 camera that were positioned throughout the over 50,000 person crowd. The film’s director, Adam Smith, was able to capture the ridiculously “mind-bending” audio-visual live show that is so characteristic of The Chemical Brothers.

For #adidasunderground, the challenge was to take the film, which captures an already intense barrage of lights, sound and music, and augment it in such a way that does the film justice as opposed to detract from the experience. They did just that. Plastered across the sweeping HD screens of the transformed space, the film was paired with a sound system that made you forget that you weren’t actually witnessing the events live and an array of lasers and lights that effectively mimicked the live show’s timing and sequence.

With over 50 make-up artists on hand, the #adidasunderground team took it a step further by requiring all entrants to paint their faces like clowns to mimic the film’s footage. Furthermore, the special invite-only event took it to the next level by supplying each and every attendee with a white adidas track suit. The result was a psychedelically orchestrated masquerade that left attendees recognizable by only perhaps the shoes on their feet that served as the slightest differentiating point. Following the film’s showing, an elevated platform at the right of the room welcomed The Chemical Brothers’ tour DJ, Mr. James Holyrod to the stage taking those in attendence on an even further surreal journey through the DON’T THINK mind.

Lee Fields & The Expressions: Faithful Man Album

Lee Fields & The Expressions “Faithful Man” from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

“Lee Fields doesn’t mess around. On Faithful Man, his first album since 2009′s acclaimed My World, it takes the veteran soul man just eight seconds to hit peak intensity. “I’ve always been a faithful man, till you came along,” he pleads against a tense “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World”-style groove. His voice filled with apocalyptic dread because he knows he’s powerless against temptation, but he also knows that giving in will change his life forever. It’s classic soul conundrum – and these days, nobody does classic soul better than Lee Fields.”

G.O.O.D. Music Complex Magazine Photoshoot by Nabil Elderkin

Cover stars include Common, Pusha T, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Q-Tip, John Legend and 2 Chainz. While the issue doesn’t officially hit newsstands until August 7, choice excerpts appear below while the entire editorial can be perused over at Complex.

What does G.O.O.D. Music mean to you?
Big Sean: Quality—the best. Kanye put himself in a class that nobody can match, as far as evolving, progressing, and taking the best of what we learn and making more out of it. So the brand is just being the coolest. We dress the best, we rap the best, we sing the best, we look the best. [All laugh.] It’s about getting the money, but it’s also about changing the world and doing what the fuck we want to do.

Pusha T: And knowing that it’s limitless. That’s the biggest thing that comes with G.O.O.D. Music. You get so much, and the fans get so much, in fucking with this brand. From G.O.O.D. Fridays to these 30-minute movies in the Middle East…

Kid Cudi: —made on a whim.

Pusha: There’s just so much that comes along with the brand, as far as showing people that we can do what we want. There are no limitations.

John Legend: It starts with the name itself. We want to be known for quality. We want to be known for stuff that we all can be proud of. That creativity, that attention to detail, that quality control—that’s what distinguishes us from other folks who might just be chasing a hit. Kanye picks artists who care about making great art. We all want to make money and do well, but we also want to make great art that’s important and interesting.

Common: There was a moment in hip-hop when I went to SOB’s and I saw Kanye perform before he came out with The College Dropout. The thing that amazed me was that the “backpack” crowd was there, and then there was the Roc-A-Fella crowd, dudes who were throwing up the Roc. I was like, “Yes.” It reminded me of when I grew up. There was niggas who sold dope that was listening to Rakim and A Tribe Called Quest—and there wasn’t no separation. They just liked it.

What does it mean to have Kanye West involved in the production of your album?
Cudi: He knows what he’s talking about. It’s crazy how insanely smart he is—it’s frustrating at times. When I’m playing him stuff, he usually likes it. [Laughs.] But I remember there was a time when I played him something, and he was like, “Turn it off. That was terrible.” We were in Hawaii, working on 808s & Heartbreak. That was when I first got on board, and I was doing hooks, and I was just trying to find my place. One day, I got to the studio early, and I was like, “I’m going to make a beat.” Then he came in, and I was all excited to play it…. He made this face. I was like, “Oh my God. I want to make sure he never feels like that about anything that I ever make again.”

Common: He was the first producer that I had that was like, “Man, change that verse.” or “Nah, that line is weak. Hell nah.” [All laugh.]

Cudi: But that’s what it’s about, man. And I didn’t feel bad. I was like, “OK, back to the drawing board. I bet that nigga won’t say that again.” I don’t think he’s shot down any song I’ve played for him since.

Kanye is well-known for his ruthless pursuit of quality. He doesn’t accept less than 100 percent from himself, and he certainly doesn’t from those around him. Do you feel pressure?
Tip: I don’t feel like that because, like you said, he understands what the talent is—it’s on par with his. One thing that we all have in common, Kanye included, is that we all want to be great. We all have that drive. Kanye channels it—he’s the nucleus. But at the same time, it’s collaborative. He’s open to whatever it is. If there’s pressure, it’s just to do outstanding shit. And that’s more of a drive than a pressure.

Cudi: Luckily, everybody has their own vision. No one is lost. A lot of artists get lost. They drop an album, and then they go fucking blank. But everybody here sees their career 10 years from now. I don’t think anybody is seeing their career year to year, like a motherfucker working check to check. Everyone has their own vision, so there’s no pressure.

John Legend: There have been plenty of artists signed to artists’ labels that haven’t had nearly the kind of success as the head of the label. Even with G.O.O.D. Music we have artists that have done very well, and we’ve had artists that haven’t. Being attached to Kanye is only going to get you so far. You’ve still got to have the records, the talent, and the artistry to carry it on your own.

Rare HD Apollo 11 Moon Launch Footage Remix

Forty three years ago, on July 16, 1969, and forty two years before the Space Shuttle landed for the last time, three men would travel to the moon, set foot there, take a few photos, and come back. In tribute, I made this video with music courtesy of Burning Star Core using amazing lift-off footage captured from the umbilical tower of the Saturn V launch pad by a 16mm camera that was running at a whopping — but normal-for-NASA — 500 frames per second.

Aspid GT-21 Invictus

Autoblog –

Aspid has finally gotten around to revealing the production version of the GT-21 Invictus. This funky-looking sports car delivers 450 horsepower to the rear wheels thanks to a BMW-sourced 4.4-liter V8 engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox or six-speed manual. That’s a far cry from the supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder found in the Spanish company’s first offering. Aspid says the GT-21 Invictus can lay waste to 60 mph from a standstill in under three seconds on its way to a top speed of 189 mph. Even better, the creation’s suspension can serve up 1.6 g on the skidpad.

The company has managed to keep weight to a mere 2,182 pounds thanks to composite body panels and a spaceframe chassis. Interestingly enough, the GT-21 Invictus is also available with a slew of on-road safety equipment, including adaptive airbags, stability control and anti-lock brakes.

Inside, there’s a 2+2 seating configuration, which suggests there’s actually room for two adults and their luggage for a weekend trip. Aspid is currently aiming to start building its newest model in 2014, but there’s no word on pricing yet.

The Race That Shocked the World Documentary

For the first time ever all eight finalists of the dramatic men’s 100m final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics tell their story.

The 100 metre sprint final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics was the fastest and dirtiest race in history. Six of the eight runners have since tested positive for banned substances. Ben Johnson, the winner, received a career destroying ban, whilst his rival, Carl Lewis, had failed three drug tests prior to the competition, and British runner Linford Christie, who finished second, was eventually banned for a series of drug test failures. In this program, Johnson and other runners will tell their personal stories of the race, and also put into context how and why athletes become drug cheats.
