Tiger Woods + Nike Free Golf Shoe Prototypes
Don’t be surprised if one of these puppies are my next golf shoe. I’ve been bouncing between a pair of Adidas, Nike and Footjoy golf shoes and my Nike’s definitely look the coolest. They’re comfortable and turn heads on the course. Plus I know Nike never do things in half ass when it comes to technology in their footwear and the looks to match. Can’t wait to see these on the shelves! Here’s a little info on the new designs –
Tiger Woods has been working with one of the Directors within NIKE’s Innovation Kitchen, Tobie Hatfield, and NIKE Golf on a FREE-inspired prototype shoe that Tiger will wear during this week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
Originally developed in 2004 by a group led by Hatfield, NIKE FREE is a ‘natural motion’ technology that is designed to mimic and conform to the natural motion of the foot, coupled with the protection and traction of a lightweight performance shoe.
The FREE-inspired elements in this prototype model allow greater movement for the front of the foot, increasing stability with mobility. “This will help give Tiger greater stability as he addresses the ball. The freedom of movement that natural motion technology delivers will also allow more power to be released through the swing rather than through the body – which can happen when your feet are too static.” said Hatfield.
“I love the feel of NIKE FREE for training, so I asked Tobie if it was possible to bring that technology to the golf course. It’s exciting to see a conversation like that come to life and I look forward to wearing them this week,” added Tiger.
The majority of the upper consists of a polyurethane coated stretch fabric, also seen within the construction of NIKE Basketball’s Hyperfuse 2011. Part of the heel is created from recycled NIKE Air Max units melted into thread and then woven together to create a strong, breathable textile material. The FREE-inspired outsole is directly taken from NIKE Sportswear’s Special Field Boot designed for first-responders.
This model also has a half heel counter in both shoes to give more stability on the lateral side, particularly in follow through. The shoe also incorporates NIKE Flywire (first introduced in Beijing in 2008) attached to each lace loop, which when pulled tight envelope the foot for maximum comfort and stability.
My Mobile Office in Tokyo
I’m back in Tokyo wooo!!! hoooo!!! I’m in back in town to extend my visa, catch up with a few peeps and of course check out the creative scene I miss so much. As great as it is to be back in my favourite city in the world. Work doesn’t doesn’t stop and after presenting some store front designs to a new client in Hong Kong they have now asked me to the do the brand identity for the job as well and of course they need it yesterday. I’m becoming the master of mobile offices whether it’s a cafe, apartment, hotel lobby or in this case the great guys at my hotel in Tokyo have set me up a pop-up office with an additional computer, printer, free wifi and even given me a key to use it 24hours! I love Japanese hospitality. We could all learn a thing about service from them.
My posting may be a little low over the next couple of days so bear with me and I’ll have a heap of new stuff when I get back.
Bedtime reading thanks to Tsutaya
Tokyo has one of the best book and magazine stores in the world called TSUTAYA in Roppongi Hills. I always do a few trips there when I’m in town and when I was living in Tokyo conveniently picked an apartment almost across the road from it. One of the best magazine selections I’ve ever seen. I popped down there this evening to grab a few magazines and ended up coming out with a pile of everything from fashion, japanese illustrators, interiors, a surf dvd, skateboarding, and hat&cap magazines. Can’t wait to find time to look through them all. The only problem is they weigh a tone, so I’m not sure how I’m going to get these all back Hong Kong yet.

BMW I8 Concept
BMW announced the creation of the i8 plug-in hybrid last week.
BMW i8 is complete new build, unlike the former 2 where are based on existing platforms. Like its i3 cousin, the i8 employed the LifeDrive architecture, compartmentalized design which incorporated lightweight composite of aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) as base. With this structural upgrade, BMW promised the i8 to dash from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds with only a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and a set of electric motor at the front. One other unique integration is the special app on any smartphone platforms.
Keep a look out for the i8 in Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol.

Tyler, The Creator: Goblin Album
Tyler Okonma, better known by his stage name Tyler, The Creator, is an a rapper, record producer and music video director from LA. He is the leader of the hip hop group OFWGKTA. He gained fame from his single “Yonkers”, which Kanye West called “the video of 2011”. His stuff isn’t for everyone but I dig his style and creativity.

The Art of FLIGHT: The Metal Trailer 2
I can’t wait for this to come out in September. The first video ‘That’s It. That’s All’ changed the way I snowboarded. I’m sure from the two trailers that this is one’s going to be even more mind blowing. Track is by Arch Enemy – “Vengeance Is Mine”.
Food for thought
This is an area of design I’ve never really thought of, but imagine if you got the opportunity to create your own candy bar. There’s quite a lot of elements that you’d have to consider to it. How big would it be? What ingredients would you use? What shape would it be? How would you package it? What would you name it? It’s an interesting thought and has got me thinking outside the box and an area I’d like to investigate more. Sorry if this has made you hungry.
