MICK JAGGER: “EXCESS WAS THE ORDER OF THE DAY”

The Talks Interview –

Mr. Jagger, what kept you from completely going off the deep end?

I mean we all did excessive things and I had a lot of unstable moments as I’m sure everyone does in their life. Maybe it helped me that I had a very centered upbringing.

So your parents basically.

Yeah, I think so. When you are young and you have a sort of close family life and stuff, it helps you to be centered for later. If you don’t have a centered upbringing, I think it is much more difficult.

You still had a very destructive lifestyle back then.

Excess was the order of the day. But that was just a period. You know you get excessive people nowadays as well. Today people are excessive consuming things, like consumer goods.

But you were even chased by the police for your drug abuse. How do you remember those days?

At the time it wasn’t very funny. It wasn’t very good because it completely took over our lives creatively and we couldn’t do this and couldn’t do that. You had to spend all your time trying to deal with all the police and you didn’t have time to do anything else.

Were there moments where you were lying in your bed thinking that you should slow down?

I was not that bad, no. I was pretty centered really. Once I even had a very nice house in the South of France that I rented from someone. I had a very nice garden, I could walk around, I had a really nice swimming pool. A friend of mine was a falconer and he used to come and train his falcons in my garden. I found that very restful and interesting.

The period you are referring to now was in 1971 when The Rolling Stones had to leave London because of massive tax problems. You were world famous back then, broke with the government on your tail.

We were broke, yeah. Taxes very were punitive. Through our own fault and other people’s faults we had not been very good with looking after our money. We got money from the record company to fund our album, otherwise we couldn’t have come to the South of France and lived in a nice place. But we had a lot of back taxes to pay and that was the only way we could do it at that time.

You ended up recording Exile on Main Street there, an album that became part of rock history. Looking back do you consider this as your most important work?

My finest hour. (laughs) Well, it is certainly good and certainly it was a very creative period, a really good period. Some very good things came in that period in music. There was some crap as well but there were some really good things, some good rock things, it was a very good period for soul music as well. They had great albums by Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Marvin Gaye. It’s a very good album, but I don’t know if I have a best one. I mean do you have a best film? I don’t really have favorites. And I don’t listen to Rolling Stones albums.

How long does it take before you start to miss music?

I did seven years in the 80’s where I didn’t do any shows and I didn’t really miss it very much.

What’s your perception of yourself today? English gentleman or rock legend?

I don’t think of any of those things. They are all sort of meaningless. Meaningless typecasts. Do you wake up in the morning and think, “I’m such and such?” You just are you. You become aware of all that when you’re doing these kinds of official appointments. That’s the only time you ever think of it.

Your history with beautiful women is widely known and now your daughter Georgia Jagger is becoming a famous model. You know exactly how dirty that business is.

Yeah, well we chat about all that. We talk about all that quite a lot.

So any specific recommendations you give her?

Don’t take life too seriously and always remember: it is just a passing fad.

What feelings do you have when you think about the fact that one day the era of the Rolling Stones will be over?

Everyone’s life comes to an end. And all around us, you and me, our life will come to an end. You will stop being a journalist and you will die. So what can I tell you? We’re all going to come to the same fate. So you just keep going while you can, doing what you like. So I am just the same as everybody else.

If you don’t fear death, as you just stated, what about illness?

I don’t look at the clouds of tomorrow through the sunshine of today.

Keith Richards just wrote his autobiography. Would you ever publish one?

I’m sure I would but I think dwelling on the past for longer than a few months is really dull.

If you think back, what do you remember with fondness and what do you regret?

I don’t regret anything and I am very fond of all of it. My years with the Rolling Stones are and were a wonderful time, really. I mean, you could paint it in a very dark light: it was decadent, yeah it was quite decadent, but decadence is very enjoyable, isn’t it?

GLOBE ‘YEAR ZERO’ Movie (Trailer)

YEAR ZERO TRAILER from GLOBE on Vimeo.

Very well shot and leaves me wanting to see more. YEAR ZERO is a modern take on high performance surfing set in a post-apocalyptic world, reminiscent of Mad Max or an HG Wells novel. It tells a story of a band of renegade surfers, including Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol, Nate Tyler, Taj Burrow, CJ Hobgood and Damien Hobgood, on a road trip through the apocalypse in search of waves, women, and good times. The film’s original soundtrack by BLACK MOUNTAIN, whom VICE MAGAZINE has called, “One of the best rock n’ roll bands of our time,” creates a sonic landscape that fully delivers the immersive experience that director Joe G envisioned for the film.

PAS House: The Skateable House

This is true meaning of living and breathing skateboarding.

The PAS House, to be built in Malibu, CA, is the ultimate rebuke to the notion that play shouldn’t occur indoors, simply because every surface in the house is skateable. PAS stands for Pierre Andre Senizergues, founder and CEO of Sole Technology, parent company of etnies, Emerica and eS. He came up with the vision for the house and got together with artist Gil Le Bon Delapointe to creat the design — a modern single family home and skate ramp in one — and eventually passed the project on to architect Francois Perrin, who is now finalizing plans on the house. Together they’ve created a skateboarder’s paradise, where everything from the kitchen counter to even the bed can be skated. Currently a full-scale, 753.5-square foot prototype of the house’s living area is on display at La Gaite Lyriqe in Paris. The exhibition will run through August 7th.

Alila Villas Uluwatu – Bali

Bali has never been at the top of my list of destinations I want to visit. I’m not sure if it’s because I was lucky enough to spend most of my weekends surfing the east coast beaches of Australia or because I only knew of Kuta beach which seemed to be a dodgy hub for western tourists. Either way, over the past few years I’m seeing more and more amazing resorts and villas popping up that just make too hard to resist. Alila Villas Uluwatu is the lastest piece of paradise to lure you over to Indonesia. Looks like a great place to take a lady friend.

Overview:

Alila Villas Uluwatu is designed by award-winning Singapore architectural firm, WOHA, which has built a global reputation for innovative design for projects in tropical environments earning it the Royal Australian Institute of Architect’s (RAIA) International Award at the 2006 National Architecture Awards in Brisbane for their House on Rochalie Drive in Singapore, and Architectural Review MIPIM future projects award for The Met, a high-rise condominium in Bangkok, to name a few. Since 1989, directors Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell have been involved in the cutting edge of Asian hospitality design, having worked on many well-known hotel and villa developments.

Richard Hassell speaks of this eco-friendly project …”We are very pleased that Alila Hotels have embraced the Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles, and we are using many ESD measures including local materials, water conservation with soaks and rain gardens and recycling with grey water systems, using local plants from the special Bali Savannah ecosystem on the Bukit, which are being raised in a nursery on site to encourage local bird and animal life, heat pumps for water heating, salt water pools – among many others. The resort is registered for Green Globe certification, and will be the first hotel in Bali to get the highest level of certification for ESD. As it is built into the resort from the beginning, there will be a strong combination of the built fabric and on-going operations side working together to reduce the long-term ecological footprint of the resort.”

The design of the interiors is completely integrated with the architecture, as the design flows from inside to outside. All the materials are locally sourced. These beautiful local materials are environmentally sound and support the local communities.

JACK NICHOLSON: “I PUT ON A GOOD SHOW”

The Talks Inteview:

Mr. Nicholson, do you often think about dying?

Yes, these are subjects that we think about all the time but don’t necessarily talk about. Everybody has thought about if they want to be cremated, buried, or whatever.

What’s your preference?

I want a big 25-foot pink statue that holds my grave. Or I also might like the way the Indians did it. They hang you up on the top of a tree and the birds eat you. No, really I would probably choose cremating.

Are there any positive aspects of aging?

Plenty. You are more thoughtful because you don’t act as quickly anymore. When I turned 70 it was the first time I felt young for my age. Fifty dropped on me like a ton of bricks – there is something about that number – but when 70 came along I felt good about it.

What made you feel younger?

I don’t know. I mean why relate to a number anyway? I used to be very quick, I would be able to leave the room and be back before you noticed. When you can’t do that anymore you need to change the style of how you do things. But I’m very interested in life and you don’t want to lose that.

What were the highlights of your life?

The first screening of Easy Rider in Cannes, because I had been there before sneaking around. When I was sitting in the screening I realized that I was actually going to be a movie star. When I was over there I was pretty much already thinking about directing because I had been doing movies for 10 or 12 years by then. And everybody said I was good, but being known and not having a big film success is almost tougher than being completely new. It just kind of turned my life around and was definitely a highlight.

Do you ever get that same buzz now?

When they say I’m a great actor, I close my ears because it’s not good for you to think that way.

You seem pretty confident though.

Well, you know, I put on a good show.

Would you say you’re mean to people?

I’m in the movie business; it’s meant to be very cutthroat. But you won’t find anybody that ever says I cheated them or manipulated them.

Not even girls?

The girls only did that because they missed me more than they thought they would.

Are you a womanizer?

Absolutely.

Do you use your acting skills on women?

I never separate.

What do you like the most about women?

I just want them to be a person. I just started a book about how the genders are in two different conversations and it feels like this book was written specifically against me. The male character in that book is my generation and thinks that you have to be your own man, but what the women want is a whole different conversation. She wants reassurance and wants to be supported, yet feels manipulated when it happens. The idea of the book is that we are all talking different languages.

Do you like it when women take the first step?

That would be nice but it doesn’t happen to me. Women are sort of like motorcycle gangs with me. They get really shy and polite. I don’t know why.

What’s your secret?

I’m available.

Are you more of a one-night stand guy or are you more interested in relationships?

Of course I’m capable of being someone’s one-night stand, but I don’t approach it that way.

Do you have a “love of your life”?

More than one unfortunately. At 55 I said the probability is I won’t have another relationship. I just didn’t want to start another family. Between my own bizarre criteria and taste and the fact that I’m not available for many things I thought it was unlikely. Once you know the science about it, I don’t think anybody should consider being committed to a real eternal relationship until you’re through something called the infatuation circle.

How long does that take?

It’s 18 months and it hasn’t changed since the beginning of time. In the first 18 months anything can happen and you are fine with it. For a long time I thought I really loved everything about a girl and then I found out it wasn’t like that.

What about the bizarre criteria you mentioned?

I’m sure I’m something of an egoist in that sense. Who I’m attracted to is not narrow but it’s a high. I’ve also been married once. The mother of my first kid wanted to get married on a Wednesday and on Friday we were married. I always thought it counterproductive to have a policy in this area. If it is difficult to know yourself as an individual, it seems to be more complex as a couple. So if you say, “Oh I like a person who is like this and that,” you might take away the possibility of seeing the only one that might be right for you.

Do you have any regrets in your life?

Not that I can think of. I’m sure there are some, but my mind doesn’t go there. When you look at life retrospectively you rarely regret anything that you did, but you might regret things that you didn’t do.
