Nymi by Bionym
Business Insider Article –
Toronto-based startup Bionym launched a wristband that will unlock your devices based on your heartbeat.
Heartbeats, like fingerprints, are unique to every individual. But Bionym thinks lifting a finger is too labor intensive. Instead, your device should know who you are automatically.
Wear the wristband, called Nymi, and an embedded electrocardiogram sensor recognizes your heartwaves and auto-authenticates all of your devices. No more memorizing passwords because you are the password.
The wristband just launched for pre-order at $79 (though the price will jump to $99 after the first 25,000 devices get snatched up).
Nymi also touts both a proximity sensor and a motion detector, and its promotional video explores the realm of possibilities: you could pop your car’s trunk with the flick of a wrist, pay for coffee without reaching for your wallet, or open hotel room doors simply by standing in front of them.
“We don’t view this as just a product to unlock your devices, smartphones, etc.,” CEO Karl Martin told TechCrunch. “Those are security applications. We’re looking beyond that to smart environments. How do we enable hyper-personalized experience?”
Bionym was founded in 2011 and recently raised a $1.4 million seed round of financing.
Nymi promises to open source its API, so the possibilities, from gaming to banking, could as vast as developer creativity. What remains to be seen, however, is if anyone will actually want to wear one.

Korea Will Soon Be Home To The World’s First ‘Invisible’ Skyscraper
The world will soon have its first “invisible” skyscraper.
There’s no construction date yet for the planned 1,476-foot tower, called Tower Infinity. But its architects have just been granted a construction permit to begin building outside of Seoul, South Korea near Incheon International Airport.
The visionaries behind the project, GDS Architects, will make the tower appear “invisible” using an LED facade system with optical cameras to display what’s directly behind the building. When turned on, the “reflective skin” of the building will give the illusion that Tower Infinity is blending in with the skyline.
The building’s projections may also be used for broadcasting special events, or for advertising purposes, according to GDS Architects.
The tower itself has an impressive profile, with a main spire flanked on either side by two separate building wings. Tower Infinity will be used primarily for entertainment and leisure purposes, and is set to include a 4D theater, restaurants, a water park, landscaped gardens, and the third-highest observation deck in the world.
“Instead of symbolizing prominence as another of the world’s tallest and best towers, our solution aims to provide the World’s first invisible tower showcasing innovative Korean technology while encouraging a more Global narrative in the process,” Charles Wee, AIA, GDS Design Principal said in the press release. “We look forward to providing Korea and the world with a completely new model for what it means to be an observation tower.”

Tomos Classic XL Moped
The moped is back. If you’ve been following along, however, it never really went anywhere in the first place. For many years, the mopeds of the 1970s and 80s have been faithfully maintained and driven by a cult of small-motor enthusiasts throughout the world. Today, one of the most revered brands in vintage mopeds has released a new moped– for the first time in 30 years. Tomos is back, and has revealed a new moped in a limited run to its UK adherents– the Tomos Classic XL Moped.
The new Tomos Classic XL Moped is a compact pedal-start moped with a 49cc engine and a 27 mph top-end. While this model is for sale only in the UK at present, those numbers translate quite well to the United States. Reason being, a two-wheeled vehicle with less than 50ccs of displacement (and a ~25mph top end) doesn’t require a motorcycle license in most states. Anyone can hop aboard and pilot their way through the city streets of downtown USA without additional paperwork. This is one of several reasons a moped like this is so attractive to young people in modern cities.
A second reason the Tomos Classic XL moped is so attractive is its efficiency. This low-displacement engine can get over 100 miles to a gallon for the right driver. It barely sips fuel, using what equates to a lawn mower engine to cruise to up to 25 mph. A third reason these mopeds are so adored by the Moped Army (which is a real thing) is how easy they are to maintain. Anecdotally, Tomos mopeds are often considered the easiest to maintain, to modify and to upgrade. Bikes like the venerable Puch Maxi of the 1970s (we have one in our garage) are a close second, but few bikes are as easy to maintain as a Tomos. Those who are completely ignorant of engines and vehicle maintenance can get a quick handle of how to operate and maintain a moped like this.
The Tomos Classic XL Moped is available in a limited run in the UK for around $2,150 after conversion to USD. There’s no news on a US arrival yet, but the sheer number of Tomos riders in the US might force their hand. For those who want cheap, easy and efficient transportation in the modern city, this is a brilliant way to go. For moped fans like us, it is very exciting news.
Jawbone Mini Jambox
The biggest name in bluetooth speakers just got a little bit smaller with the new Jawbone Mini Jambox. This svelte speaker system measures in at just six-by-two-by-one inches but manages to pack a whole lot of volume within. It uses a pair of proprietary acoustic drivers and a passive bass radiator to fill a room with sound for casual listening. It connects to your mobile device via Bluetooth 4.0 or the standard 3.5mm jack, the former allowing 33-feet of air room between your device and this speaker. Not only is the Jawbone Mini Jambox functional, just like its bigger brothers, it’s also a stylish little thing. It’s available in an array of colors and patterns that’ll excite the kid-in-a-candy-store in you. For just $179, it’s primed to be an ideal holiday gift for a friend or family member for its fall arrival.

The Hundreds x Shadow Conspiracy Fall/Winter 2013 Capsule Collection
The Shadow Conspiracy is pleased to announce the release of the The Hundreds X The Shadow Conspiracy collection, available at The Hundreds’ flagship locations (THLA, THSF, THNY and THSM) and authorized stockists on Thursday, September 19th, 2013. The line will also be available through the The Hundreds Online Shop beginning Monday, September 23rd, 2013.
“We all wanted to do a project that was more than just some decals placed on a stock BMX bike. This is why we choose to create a custom made Shadow frame that is limited to just this project and will never be produced again. We choose to do a 20″ BMX bike rather than a 24″ or 26″ as this represents true BMX and we didn’t want this project to be a toy, this bike can be taken out of the box and is ready to shred by a top rider or a causal fan, but its for sure a real machine for BMX. This is a important point as this shows the craftsmanship ship, love and attention to detail put into this project.” -Ron Bonner, The Shadow Conspiracy
The limited edition The Hundreds X The Shadow Conspiracy collection encompasses a custom designed 20″ Shadow BMX bike, an accompanying 13-piece bicycle Shadow multi tool, a vintage-inspired BMX jersey, and a dual-branded graphic tee and a snapback paying homage to this long-anticipated collaboration that’s been a decade in the works. The capsule is a meld of classic and contemporary BMX culture, Hot rod culture, with high end craftsmanship.
