The MOOBY by Madella Simone

This bike concept, called the MOOBY by designer Madella Simone. MOOBY plays with the word mobility to show that this fun one-speed is up for the challenges of urban riding. It even offers a “paneled, modular system that makes it possible to easily re-skin your ride with personalized graphics.” That means that you can change the look depending on your mood.

The hope: that more riders will be drawn to the fashionable style and opt for 2 wheels over 4!

The Crystal Dome at Swarovski Kristallwelten Wattens, Austria.

“The Crystal Dome is a kaleidoscopic, precision-cut journey into the heart of crystal – right in the middle of the homeland of crystal itself.”

This mesmerising space is The Crystal Dome at Swarovski Kristallwelten (Crystal Worlds) – the company’s museum and headquarters located in Wattens in Austria. The Crystal Dome was specifically designed to capture the feeling of being inside a crystal. There are 595 mirrors that cover the dome’s walls, creating a kaleidoscope of shifting shapes, reflections and colours, that gradually reveal hidden works of art. The experience of being in the space is further accentuated by the music of Brian Eno.

London Underground 150th Anniversary Coin by Barber Osgerby

A Tube train will appear on the back of Britain’s £2 coins next year, designed by British studio BarberOsgerby for the Royal Mint to celebrate the 150th anniversary of London Underground. The coin by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby depicts a Tube train emerging from a tunnel and has a patterned edge inspired by the dotted lines on the Tube map.

The designers, who received international acclaim with their “cheese grater” design for the Olympic Torch this year, said the £2 coin was the “perfect choice” to commemorate the Tube. “Its form is naturally reminiscent of the Roundel that is the universal logo of the London Underground,” they explained.

The designers chose to depict the 1967 Victoria line train due to its aesthetic simplicity and easily recognisable outline.

Another commemorative £2 coin has also been created for the Royal Mint by British designer and engraver Edwina Ellis, depicting the roundel logo with an edge inscription that reads “mind the gap”, as Tube passengers are regularly reminded.

Nic Fiddian-Green: The Horse Sculpture

Fiddian-Green was at Reschio, working on a commission for the owner, Count Antonio Bolza. And, of course, the subject matter of his massive sculpture was the horse, in this case Count Antonio’s favourite stallion, Punto, born and bred at Reschio. Ever since he saw a fifth-century B.C. carving of the head of a horse of Selene from the Parthenon at the British Museum he has worked at perfecting the form of the horse’s head, as well as mastering the ancient ‘lost wax’ technique. He works in clay, plaster, beaten lead and marble, and he oversees the casting into bronze himself. Fiddian-Green’s colossal, classically inspired equine heads are exhibited around the world in prominent locations, including ‘Still water ‘, the 30-foot head of a drinking horse right next to the Marble Arch in London.

Of his work at Castello Di Reschio, Fiddian-Green said in a statement: “At Reschio, I found new inspiration not only from the study of these wonderful Andalusian horses, but from the light, the smell, the hills, the sense of ancient peace that pervades the land from the days when St. Francis wandered through these hills, and before, way back to the time of the Etruscans. In fact the very air that fills this land upon which Reschio sits has ignited a new fire in my work.” – Bill TIkos

The Velopresso: A Mobile Espresso Bar

Combining their three loves — coffee, cycling and sustainability — inspired two London Royal College of Art product design students to create a mobile espresso bar, the Velopresso, that operates on pedal power. No electricity, no tethers. A truly free-wheeling carrier of caffeine!

This concept has surfaced before in more tentative forms but the Finnish designer Lasse Oiva and London designer Amos Field Reid have taken it to a sophisticated level. To a point where they are now looking for an industrial producer for their invention that has won the Deutsche Bank Award 2012 (Design) and placed second at the 2012 Pininfarina Design Contest.

Just five seconds of pedaling the trike will grind enough for a double shot while a camp stove heats the water and steam than powers the espresso machine. The designers are also working on a way to generate their own fuel by repurposing the used coffee grounds.

We think that Velopresso would be perfect for events, camping areas or any other location where a good espresso is absolutely necessary, even if electricity is not available. – Tuija Seipell
