Apple’s iWatch to Arrive by the End of 2013?
Sources close to Cupertino’s Apple corporation have fueled the rumor of a new innovative product called the iWatch according to the New York Times and will feature a curved glass design. It is also rumored that said product would most likely be available later this year if target plans remain on schedule. Curved glass is something that is not new in the idea, but how it is implemented could mean everything for the company known to hold close its patented rights.
What is however interesting is the fact that Apple was issued a patent in December for a novel process that yields high quality curved glass. The big question on everyone’s mind is Apple using this technology as a leveraging point to launch the new iWatch. Two of the Times sources have claimed that Apple’s new iWatch will stand apart from the competition by way of having advanced knowledge of how glass can curve around the human body. This technology is not new by any means and glassblowers from around the world have been doing this for centuries, but not for any commercial venture such as thus application would have.
Flexible glass itself has already been made by Corning Glass the number one maker of durable and workable glass and their product called Willow Glass would be an interesting twist in the manufacturing of a watch. Could Flexible Glass be the key to Apple outdistancing the competition? Apple patent does not touch on flexible glass specifically, but it does leave room for speculation for what the folks in Cupertino have planned up their corporate sleeves. Smartwatches are not a revolutionary idea and at last years CES a few of them made they way onto the showroom floor with abilities alike to similar products such as the iPhone or iPad devices. Email, texting phone calls and other social media interaction will all be available right at your wrist.
As far as spec goes so far we have heard that the so-called iWatch will features a 1.5-inch passive display, Bluetooth connectivity and obviously curved glass. What the processor will be and other important aspects will be revealed as Apple gets further along on this project, but expect more very soon. Even though it has not been stated as of yet I would imagine that some of the best features of the iOS environment would find their way into this device. Voice activation like Siri, music playing like an iPod shuffle and many of the other cool things about an i-device would be a big boost to the popularity of an iWatch product. For now the new is just new and we will have to see what yet Apple has in store for us. So what do you think, is Apple getting a bit desperate to think outside the box, or do you think this is a cool idea just waiting to happen? Thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts on the iWatch.
Google Glass
Google launched an official site for their newest hardware project: Google Glass. The project has been around for about a year now but now it seems like Google is actively trying to get the product into the hands of real consumers. On the site you can apply to become a “Glass Explorer” by simply telling the company over Google+ or Twitter #ifihadglass what you would do with them. Oh and you have to pony up $1500. No big deal.
Projects like Glass, I suppose I should really start calling it a product, get me excited because it proves we’re ready to move past the idea of data only coming to us through a phone shape. Google has chosen the face as the best place to receive and send information, while supposedly Apple will be bringing computing to the wrist. I’m not certain if either of these locations are any good for giving us large amounts of data, it’s still uncharted territory. I wouldn’t dismiss anything until we can try these devices for ourselves.
Meet MYO, the Wearable Gesture Controller
It seems like every few days another product promising the future comes across our desk only to never be heard of again. Here’s hoping that isn’t the case with MYO, a wearable gesture controller from Thalmic Labs that looks to deliver everything you’ve ever loved about sci-fi movies like the ability to move objects with your mind. Perhaps that’s a bit of an exaggeration but it’s not so far from the truth. The device uses the electrical activity from your muscles to wirelessly control all of your electronic devices including your computer and phone.
The device will be compatible with Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android and is expected to ship by the end of this year.
TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard Documentary
Makers of “TPB AFK” or “The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard” the documentary film that looks into the lives of the men who started the most infamous file-sharing site in the entire world, have just announced its release date.
The documentary that was directed by Simon Klose will be free to download on February 8th at the same time that it is premiered at the Berlinale – Berlin’s international film festival.
Klose said that this is the first time ever that a film is being put online at exactly the same time as its Berlinale screening and hopes that this unusual release method embodies the principles explored by the film’s subject matter.
A press release about the release of “TPB AFK” stated:
“By sharing this film under a Creative Commons license, we hope to contribute to a serious debate about the social and economic benefits of sharing. We also hope to prove that sharing can be a realistic business model.”
The documentary was partially funded by a Kickstarter project that was launched more than 2 years ago, however production was delayed because of Swedish Supreme Court’s decision on the fate of Pirate Bay founders Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg and Peter Sunde.
God of War: Ascension Trailer
Nearly eight years after the release of the first installment, Santa Monica Studio and Sony Computer Entertainment intend to follow up their highly successful God of War series with a seventh installment –God of War: Ascension. This preliminary trailer for the game lays the premise for the March 12 North American release. The trailer plays on the main character, Kronos, who loses his family some ten years before the occurrences in the original God of War. Set against an emotionally-charged song, Kronos’ insatiable feeling of remorse is aptly depicted, and does well to set the tone for the highly anticipated game.
Google spends $1 billion for new central London HQ
Google is building its new UK headquarters in central London. The search engine giant just purchased a 2.4-acre plot in the King’s Cross Central development in London, where the company plans to builda new, 1 million square foot office, said to range in height from 7 to 11 stories. Google did not disclose an official price for the land, but one source with knowledge of the deal told Reutersthat the company is investing £650 million ($1.04 billion) in the project. By the time construction is completed in 2016, the building is expected to be valued at more than £1 billion ($1.6 billion).
“This is a big investment by Google,” Matt Britin, Google’s VP for Northern and Central Europe, said in a statement. “We’re committing further to the UK, where computing and the Web were invented. It’s good news for Google, for London and for the UK.”
R’HA Short Film by Kaleb Lechowski
Every once in a while a wunderkind director comes along who, with heaps of talent and bootstrapping, creates something with visual effects that seem to be straight out of Hollywood. The Purchase Brothers did it when they created their alien invasion short Half-Life: Escape from City 17 on a measly $500. Then came Fede Alvarez’s Panic Attack, a similarly destructive (and low budget) short in which giant robots eviscerate Montevideo. Now, 22-year-old German film student Kaleb Lechowski has attracted big-league attention with his riveting short R’ha.
The story of an alien race betrayed by its machine army in search of independence, R’ha centers on a single interrogation scene between an uprising computer and its sentient captive. Looking to break free of the limitations of their design–and carry out total elimination of their creators–the machines use some particularly nasty “motivation protocol” to extract key information from their prisoner.
As with many short films, R’ha feels like a snippet of a much larger story. Yet the details of the scene captivate us in their own right, thanks in large part to Lechwoski’s animation. The skin luminosity, musculature, and expressive twitches of the human-snakelike character are exceptional, particularly considering this is a no-budget student film created in seven months. And the film’s intriguing backstory and ambiguous ending beg for future installments.
Given the attention Lechowski attracted even before the film was released (he gained representation from Scott Glassgold and Raymond Brothers at IAM Entertainment based solely on the pre-release trailer) more from theR’ha world seems likely. Lechwoski is currently fleshing out a feature-length story to pitch to studios as a feature. As Glassgold says, “the plan is to use Kaleb’s model of low-cost (or in the case of the short, no-cost) special effects to create a sweeping low-budget science fiction universe.” It’s a plan that seems plausible given that Lechowski’s story world places animated creatures in the “good guy” role conventionally inhabited by costly human actors.
As Lechowski prepares to head to L.A. from Berlin, where he studied Digital Film Design at Mediadesign Hochschule, Co.Create asked him a few questions about the making of R’ha.
Co.Create: Tell us how this project started. What was the inspiration for the film?
Lechowski: We‘ve all seen movies showing highly intelligent aliens but often they are not well prepared for their wars against humanity. Or they seem as if they have not much control over their body with inaccurate movements. They are sticky and wet and naked. I wanted to create an alien race that’s really intelligent. They have a lot of machinery to keep casualties at a minimum. This concept about an alien race is something I have been considering/designing for a while now, and the interrogation sequence seemed like a good entry point for a short film.
The narrative seems like a glimpse of a larger story… did you flesh out more of the backstory in order to create this short film? And why are those computers so damn angry!?
Machines have a much higher contrast than organic beings. They can tolerate very low and very high temperatures. They can always be extended and more power can be added. They are capable of almost anything. Their only limit is their design, how they are created. They feel the aliens are limiting them by design, so they decide to eliminate them. This is their goal. And as machines they don’t need another goal for now, so they hunt them down.
When it comes to creature development, was there any inspiration for your main character?
It was meant to look somewhat beautiful or elegant. He has bright skin, an almost decorated neck that’s shaped like a pharaoh or a king cobra. Yet he is strong. I loved the way Caesar from Rise of the Planet of the Apesexpressed his emotion, so it inspired me a lot, as well.
What animation software did you use to create it?
Most things were done in Maya, like animation, rigging, shading, and rendering (Mental Ray). But I modeled almost everything in Blender because it is a lot faster for me, and I used zBrush to sculpt the alien and paint a lot of objects. Post-production was done in Nuke and After Effects.
Were there any parts of the animation that posed particular challenges?
It was quite an effort to make him receive electric shocks. I recorded myself cramping and tried to animate it that way. I ended up setting keyframes almost every two frames. Another big thing was the slow-motion jump. I recorded myself again to see the timing and, most important, the movement.
What does R’ha mean?
I really like the sound of Ra as an Egyptian god. It’s simple but sounds mighty.
Myspace Unveils Next Generation Redesign
Expertly synced with the release of Justin Timberlake‘s groovy new hit “Suit & Tie,” Myspace has unveiled its newest redesign to the public today. Prior to this, the new version of the website was only available to select beta entrants, but today has been opened for mass registration. Skepticism of the website’s potential success first arose upon the release of a promotional trailer in September 2012, when details of Timberlake and Specific Media’s joint purchase came to the spotlight. Adding a social aspect to music seems to be the key focus in this version of the site. The front page of the new Myspace plays home, at least for now, to access of Timberlake’s newest single, providing added incentive for users to sign up. If there is room for a new reigning social media network, the space will be created by Myspace in the coming months. Only time can tell.

Apples 1986 Clothing Line
Apple’s 1986 clothing line was known as “The Apple Collection”. The timing would be perfect if Apple were to rerelease this collection with their current brand image a little beaten up after leaving a lot of fans very disappointed with the iPhone5 and Samsung becoming a serious threat. Nothing helps a brand more than channeling it’s roots and reminding us all that Apple is still ‘hip’ ‘dude’.

The Velopresso: A Mobile Espresso Bar
Combining their three loves — coffee, cycling and sustainability — inspired two London Royal College of Art product design students to create a mobile espresso bar, the Velopresso, that operates on pedal power. No electricity, no tethers. A truly free-wheeling carrier of caffeine!
This concept has surfaced before in more tentative forms but the Finnish designer Lasse Oiva and London designer Amos Field Reid have taken it to a sophisticated level. To a point where they are now looking for an industrial producer for their invention that has won the Deutsche Bank Award 2012 (Design) and placed second at the 2012 Pininfarina Design Contest.
Just five seconds of pedaling the trike will grind enough for a double shot while a camp stove heats the water and steam than powers the espresso machine. The designers are also working on a way to generate their own fuel by repurposing the used coffee grounds.
We think that Velopresso would be perfect for events, camping areas or any other location where a good espresso is absolutely necessary, even if electricity is not available. – Tuija Seipell
