A Peek Inside The Mind Of Dieter Rams

Gizmodo Article –

He’s the world’s greatest living product designer. And 40 years ago, he changed the look and feel of consumer electronics forever.

In the early 1960s, the Federal Republic of Germany gradually emerged from the isolation resulting from National Socialism and World War II. America was now no longer only a model to emulate, but also an export market, primarily for German cars made by Mercedes, Volkswagen or Porsche.

But two decades after the end of the war, international photographers once again worked for a German magazine, twen; in 1963 Germany and France signed a treaty of friendship; the art exhibition ‘documenta’ in Kassel became an event that was revered worldwide; and in 1958 several items from the Braun product programme were included in the Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Germany had become more international again.

The time was ripe for an innovative radio, which simultaneously morphed into a paradigmatic work by the designer Dieter Rams. It reflects both cosmopolitan attitudes and mobility, two characteristics that are considerably more important today. Lifting a flap on the block-shaped enclosed body reveals a complex operating area comprising scale [display] , tuning knobs and connection jacks whose diversity contrasts with the smooth, uniform exterior. You already gain a sense of the big, wide world of shortwave opening up through eight shortwave radio bands in addition to long wave and medium wave. Drawing on considerable technical advancements, the device represents a climax of German engineering achievement, providing excellent reception of even the most remote station. Once again, the design of Dieter Rams is in every respect primarily driven by the respective function: red is used to indicate the VHF range – for the press switch, rotary switch and for the scale numbering. All the operating knobs are logically and clearly arranged and are of a size suitable for the human hand. The waveband selection switch is generously proportioned, the extensive operating manual has its own compartment in the housing flap so that it is always to hand and the large, detailed scale not only indicates precision, but is a classic example of accurate design with its extremely fine typography and clear numbering.

Colette Carnaval: 1997/2012 (15 Years)

For a whole week-end, Colette celebrated its 15th birthday. Outside its walls, under a gigantic tent of 4 000m2 in the Garden of Tuileries, the shop invited brands and collaborators to run stands and attractions in a festive atmosphere. Food stands, design, beauty, fashion, musical animation, sport and art, a great choice which illustrates the eclecticism of Colette. With a free entrance and for a wide public, the event was a sucess. 2 000 entrance a day, 4 000 for the whole week-end.

World’s First Double Barrel 1911 Semi-automatic Pistol

The AF2011-A1 Double Barrel Pistol comes actually as the very first industrial double barrel semiautomatic pistol of all times. The original idea came about ten years back to Swiss armourer Vivian Mueller, who at the time experienced cutting and welding together multiple parts of the famous Sig P210: the result was a long slide, double barrel 9mm, highly decorated collector piece, which indeed shot very well.

Our idea took the challenge further: to commemorate the legendary Colt 1911-A1 in the Centenary by making a true industrial market-ready double barrel .45 caliber pistol.
We achieved success in the brief span of 6 months, after intense and round-the-clock 3D designing, stereolithographic modeling and parts machining.

The gun can be handled by any shooter able to shoot with a .45 Acp and it is not only very pleasing, but very accurate and great fun. The AF2011-A1 holds amazing and surprising target performance for the shooter: in fact, it will group all the 8 double .45 caliber rounds (16
bullets) held in the duplex, single columns magazines, in a target of the size of an orange at 15 yards and of a water melon at 25.

The stopping power of the AF2011-A1 is tremendous: 2 bullets for a total of 460 Grains weight impacting at 1 to 2 inches apart (depending on the distance of the target) will knock down a bull, while the whole 18 bullets, for a payload exceeding 4000 Grains, can be delivered to the target in about 3 seconds.

The AF2011-A1 obviously features a number of very special parts, such as the single slide, the single frame, the single spur double hammer, the single grip safety, the single body double mainspring housing and the single double cavity magazine floor plate, the long and double magazine latch, the special barrel bushings and the hold open lever and side lever safety with long shafts: but the most interesting feature of the new pistol which we strived to keep during the development of the project, is the interchangeability of most internal parts, which come as standard 1911 replacement parts. These include the firing pins, the firing pins plates, the sears groups, the triple springs, the inner parts of the mainspring housings, the recoil springs and recoil springs rods, the magazine bodies and inner parts, the sights (including after market adjustable sights) the grips and grips screws and bushings.

The AF2011-A1 (“Twenty Eleven” for aficionados) can be ordered either with 2 independent triggers and one sear group (left or right, with user-interchangeability for right or left operations) or with 2 triggers permanently joined and the choice of 1 or 2 sear groups. The AF2011-A1 is available in mirror finish Deep Blue or with a 3400 Vickers surface hardness White Ash Nitrite coating.

Quantic Dream’s Kara

Meet Kara, a tech-demo from the team at Quantic Dream, who previously made Heavy Rain. Yes, it was taken from a PS3, but no, it isn’t the developer’s next game, no matter how much you want it to be. I’m sure this has sparked a few story ideas for people out there and an eerie feeling of what we may encounter in real life in the future.

Star Wars Identities Portraits

If you’re a regular follower of my blog you’ll not only notice my love of beautiful women but I’m also a huge Star Wars fan. I always cool to see different peoples interpretations of the movie characters. And I must say this is by far! One of the best I’ve seen! I’m blown away by the attention to detail in each image. Darth Vader and the Stormtrooper are my favourites.

The Star Wars Identities exhibit lets fans connect with their favorite characters on a whole new level of amazing. The set shows six major characters from the saga, each portrait made as a collage of smaller images. The exhibit will open in Montreal and Edmonton, Canada.

KONY 2012 (PLEASE WATCH THIS)

KONY 2012 from INVISIBLE CHILDREN on Vimeo.

I received a late night Facebook message last night from a mate (Georgie Gee) back in Australia telling me if I hadn’t seen this video. I should watch it and see if it moves me as much as what it did him. I loaded up the video and can honestly say it had such an impact on me that I will be doing everything I can to support this cause. Please watch the video and help raise awareness of the inhumane acts going on in Africa.

KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

Desktop Jellyfish Tank

This 7-gallon Jellyfish Tank – a project that got funded through Kickstarter. This tank does differently is that it filters the water using a laminar flow, along the walls of the tank, creating controlled swirls which continuously nudge the jellyfish to the centre of the tank and away from danger. The kit comes with everything you need to get setup, includes a voucher for three moon jellyfis and some food. The price is $499. And life expectancy of a moon jelly is only a year; new ones cost $50 each.
