Villa Kogelhof by Paul de Ruiter Architects
Built on an area that was once farmland in Kamperland, The Netherlands, Villa Kogelhof by Paul de Ruiter Architects is a completely energy neutral house that is built around sustainable living. The house sits on an estate that is reached by a deserted road leading to the house. Initiated by the government, the estate forms a program that aims to connect regional ecological zones throughout The Netherlands, with permission to build granted only on the condition that the land was returned to its pre-agricultural state. In 2006, roughly 71,000 six-year-old trees were planted on the plot of land to help achieve this goal, one day leading to a villa in the woods.
Entered via a sloping underground driveway, the parking, storage, and a workspace are situated underneath, while the living area, kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, and a patio are encased in the floating glass box above ground, overlooking a man-made pond. With a complete glass facade, the technical modern design contrasts with the natural setting of the surrounding landscape. In order to be self-sufficient the house features a climate-facade that creates its own ventilation system, and is powered by electricity generated from PV-cells on the roof and a soon-to-be-built windmill. Villa Kogelhof was the recipient of the prestigious Dutch ARC13 Architecture Award.

“The Phantom Corsair is a six-passenger coupé prototype automobile built in 1938. Designer Rust Heinz planned to put the car into limited production. However, Heinz’s death in a car accident in July 1939 ended those plans, leaving the prototype Corsair as the only one ever built.”

The Search For The Oceans Super Predator Documentary
In the depths of Australias Southern Ocean a Great White Shark is savagely attacked by a far larger mystery predator. An electronic tracking device attached to its fin records a high-speed underwater chase before the shark and its tag are devoured. Two weeks later, after being carried in the belly of the unknown killer, the still functioning tag is excreted and washed ashore, withholding clues that could reveal the identity of the sharks super predator. This is the story of a super predators underwater attack that leads investigators to a mysterious natural phenomenon that attracts the oceans most fearsome predators.
This documentary remains the property/combined work of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and other parties therefore I do not take ownership of it. Video contains some graphic footage of animals both hunting and deceased.
NSA Can ‘Easily’ Break Cellphone Encryption
The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) has the technical capacity to crack the most commonly-used cellphone encryption technology, and in doing so it can decode and access the content of calls and text messages, according to a Washington Post report published Friday.
Citing a top-secret document leaked by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, the report states that the agency can easily break a technology called A5/1, the world’s most common stream cipher used to encrypt cellular data as it transmits to cell towers.
SEE ALSO: Will Obama Rein in NSA Surveillance Powers?
Privacy and security researcher Ashkan Soltani, co-author the Post‘s report, explains that encryption experts have long been aware of the weakness of A5/1. The technology makes use of decades-old 2G GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) cellular network technology.
The so-called “summer of revelations” on NSA surveillance tactics, fueled by Snowden’s leaked documents, has brought to light the agency’s vast data-collecting capabilities. The NSA’s considerable abilities to collect and decode cellular data would seem to allow it to track private conversations on a very wide scale.
Of course, it would be against the law for the NSA to use these capabilities to spy on Americans without a court order. But experts believe other nations have probably developed many of these same surveillance technologies.
Here’s how the NSA responded to the Post‘s inquiry about the topic:
Throughout history nations have used encryption to protect their secrets, and today terrorists, cyber criminals, human traffickers and others also use technology to hide their activities. The Intelligence Community tries to counter that in order to understand the intent of foreign adversaries and prevent them from bringing harm to Americans and allies.
NSA phone spying got the NSA in a bit of diplomatic hot water in October, when reports surfaced that the agency may have spied on German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conversations.
Global cell service providers have been slow to update their networks because it would be an “expensive, time-consuming undertaking that likely would cause interruptions in service for some customers,” according to the Post, though this is less true in the U.S. and “the wealthiest nations.”
The top-secret document does not indicate whether or not the NSA can infiltrate newer 3G and 4G GSM networks, nor does it say if the agency can break another cellular encryption technology called Code Division Multiple Access, or CDMA, which Verizon, Sprint and some foreign companies use, according to the Post.
AT&T, the largest GSM provider in the U.S., is in the process of upgrading its networks to what’s called A5/3 encryption, the Post reports, which requires 100,000 times more computing power to break compared to A5/1. T-Mobile told the Post that it is “continuously implementing advanced security technologies in accordance with worldwide recognized and trusted standards,” but the company did not go into specifics.

Willie: Transparent LCD Bus Concept by Tad Orlowski
“Willie” is an interesting concept by designer Tad Orlowski. This unique LCD bus “utilizes new trends in technology to transform city landscapes and provide an added element to getting around town.”
“The innovative feature that distinguishes „Willie” from other conventional buses is the design of the side elevations, which are made of transparent LCD screens. Today, the city bus can be transformed into a mobile billboard displaying advertisements or film clips in the most attractive parts of town or provide passengers with additional information and entertainment such as route plans, weather reports, press and TV coverage as well as tourist information presented at bus stops in an eye-catching way.”
Daft Punk: Behind The Helmets Documentary
The combined talents of DJs Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the pair’s first projects together included Darling, a voiceless indie cover band; their current recording name derives from a review in U.K. music weekly Melody Maker of a compilation tape Darling were featured on, released by Krautrock revivalists Stereolab (their lo-fi D.I.Y. cover of a Beach Boys song was derided as “daft punk”). Subsequently ditching the almost inevitable creative cul-de-sac of rock for the more appealing rush of the dancefloor, the pair released their debut single, “The New Wave,” in 1993 on the celebrated Soma label. Instantly hailed by the dance music press as the work of a new breed of house innovators, the single was followed by “Da Funk,” the band’s first true hit (the record sold 30,000 copies worldwide and saw thorough rinsings by everyone from Kris Needs to the Chemical Brothers).

One Coin for All of Your Cards
Gizmodo Article –
Carrying a wallet sucks. No question. It’s big, bulky and full of bank, credit and debit cards and a swathe of stupid loyalty cards from that coffee place you’ll never go back to. The dream is to have everything in one simple card. Meet Coin: the smart bank card that keeps all your cards in one.
Coin is a regular-sized debit card that lets you store multiple cards at once. Everything from your business credit card through to your personal debit card can be logged on the Coin.
To get cards into the device, you simply plug a swipe-card reader into your iPhone or other iOS device (no word if it works with Android yet), give the card a description and the app transfers the data to the Coin via Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy.
The Coin then has all your cards programmed into it, and you simply press a little button on the digital card itself to switch between accounts. One assumes that when you select a card, it can reprogram the magnetic stripe at the top of the card to represent the data you scanned into your iPhone.
It also has a zone alarm, which means that if you put your card down or have it stolen and it gets too far away from you, your iPhone pushes you a notification saying it has gone out of range.
The only two issues I can really envisage with this right now is the fact that it relies on magnetic stripe technology, not chip-card or contactless payment tech which is often safer. The other issue is that you probably won’t be able to stick this into your ATM and pull cash out.
Other than that, it looks incredible, and I want one.
Zaha Hadid Unveils Design for Qatar 2022 World Cup Stadium
Legendary architect Zaha Hadid continues to roll out designs during an already prolific year, with the designer now unveiling her work for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Just one of a potential nine stadiums to be constructed in the country, this particular stadium is set for construction in Al Wakrah – the southernmost city hosting the soccer tournament. The facade of the stadium take cues from a dhow, a type of fishing boat frequently found in Al Wakrah’s harbors. The shape also takes Qatar’s blazing, arid climate into consideration, incorporating a curved roof with a mechanical air conditioning system to keep spectators and players cool. Construction for the stadiums is expected to begin as early as next year.
Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo for Gran Turismo 6
Mercedes-Benz has just unveiled its latest supercar, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo, but there’s a catch. The supercar you see here was designed exclusively for Gran Turismo 6, meaning that no road-going versions of this model will be produced. However, Mercedes-Benz did create this 1:1 scale model for the opening of its new Research & Development Center in Sunnyvale, California. The AMG Vision Gran Turismo features an AMG V8 with 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, and an aluminum spaceframe with carbon fiber components to keep the weight down. Like the recent Mercedes-Benz SLS and the 300SL from the ’50s, the Vision Gran Turismo comes complete will gullwing doors. Players will be able to drive the new supercar when Gran Turismo 6 launches in December.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Epic Leg Split for Volvo Trucks
A lot of auto ads run a disclaimer that the stunt was performed by professionals and viewers shouldn’t try this at home. You’d definitely be wise to take that advice with regards to this ad Volvo Trucks featuring action star Jean-Claude Van Damme.
In the ad, Van Damme does a stunt that is truly insane, involving an epic split between two Volvo trucks.
It’s not clear whether anyone will buy a Volvo after this — the ad is designed to show off the trucks’ Volvo Dynamic Steering — but I for one have newfound respect for JCVD, who, by the way, is 53 years old.

Get Driftin’ With Razor’s Crazy Cart
You may remember Razor as the company behind all those silver scooters that popped up on your block a decade ago. Razor is still around and pumping out vehicular fun of all shapes and sizes, including a 55-pound drifting machine called the Crazy Cart that looks fantastically fun.
The Crazy Cart can reach speeds of up to 12 mph, and you can go for about 40 minutes on its two rechargeable 12V batteries. It features “variable speed foot pedal acceleration,” but has no brake — the better for drifting, yo. To that effect, it has 360-degree steering and a drift bar for managing spins, drifts, and cornering. It’s got two driving modes: “go-kart mode” for normal driving, and “crazy cart mode” for drifting.
Unfortunately, it’s designed more for older kids than adults, although if you weigh less than its 140-pound weight limit, you may be able to safely squeeze in. You can check out the video below for the sort of go kart-level The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift action it delivers.
The Crazy Cart is $400 from Toys “R” Us.
