Happy Chinese New Year 2012: May the Year of the Dragon bring you health, wealth and happiness!

This is the first time I’ve got to experience a Chinese New Year first hand in Hong Kong. It’s an amazing to see the visual displays around the city and hear all the cultural and family traditions that go on. This is an especially exciting year because it’s the year of the Dragon.

May the Year of the Dragon bring you health, wealth and happiness!

The only mythological creature in the Chinese zodiac, the dragon epitomises the yang (male/warm) energy. Those with the dragon as their animal sign are lively people who are straight to the point, proud, full of enthusiasm and have great passion for life. They are dynamic and stand out in a crowd as they are flamboyant and tend to leave a blazing trail behind them, igniting passion in some, but also scorching others who fall to ride the wave with them. Dragons are also profoundly loyal to family and friends and think nothing of laying their lives down to protect their brood. Although sincere and honest, dragons are known to act first, think later, and suffer in leisure. They can never keep their mouths shut, indulge in idle gossip and tend to believe they can take on just about anything. They can be eccentric and egotistical, demanding others to laugh at their jokes or laud that their actions. Intelligent and charismatic, but the dragon seldom applies its wisdom carefully and chooses to flirt with imagined grandeur instead.

The Chinese zodiac signs are determined by the lunar year in which you were born. The Chinese believe the animal ruling one’s birth year has a profound influence on personality, and destiny. The saying is: “This animal hides in your heart.”

Bape + Star Wars Release

Every week I get a call or Facebook message from my uncle back in Australia with a list of new Bape gear about to be release that coming Saturday. Lucky for me I have few good mates who work at the store in Causeway Bay, so a quick phone call and the gear is put aside for me and no lining up out the front of the store. On this occasion with the release of a collaboration with Star Wars on a number of different apparel. Bape went all out with an appearance from a few of the Star Wars characters including Darth Vader. So of course being a Star Wars fan and a geek streak running through me. I had to get a photo.

The snow church of Mitterfirmiansreut, Germany

A church made entirely of ice and snow that was built at the end of December 2011 in in Mitterfirmiansreut, Germany, hearkens back to a century-old tradition. Back in the winter of 1910, the townfolk of Mitterfirmiansreut were unable to visit their local church due to a heavy snowstorm. In 1911, the same townfolk decided to build a church out of the most readily available building material they had at their disposal – snow and ice. The new snow church is expected to stand firm for another month before it begins to melt but in the meantime, it welcomes locals and visitors who wish to pray inside an ice cold house of worship.

Treehotel – Sweden

Years ago, when researching an article we published on amazing tree houses, we discovered some concept renderings for a mirror cube treehouse in Sweden.  Years later, the cube finally exists as part of Treehotel, a collection of wildly imaginative tree houses in Harads, Sweden.  The Mirror Cube, designed by Martin Videgard and Bolle Tham, is perched high in the trees overlooking a valley forest below.  Its exterior is entirely lined with mirrors, appearing like a floating reflective cube amidst the pine trees.  Its interior is surprisingly spacious, with a floor-level bed and a loft above.

Biggest TEAHUPOO EVER ridden

BIGGEST TEAHUPOO EVER, SHOT ON THE PHANTOM CAMERA. from Chris Bryan on Vimeo.

This day at Teahupoo- Aug 27th 2011 during the Billabong Pro waiting period is what many are calling the biggest and gnarliest Teahupoo ever ridden. Chris Bryan was fortunate enough to be there working for Billabong on a day that will go down in the history of big wave surfing. The French Navy labeled this day a double code red prohibiting and threatening to arrest anyone that entered the water.
Kelly Slater described the day by saying “witnessing this was a draining feeling being terrified for other people’s lives all day long, it’s life or death. Letting go of that rope one time can change your life and not many people will ever experience that in their life.”
All images where shot by Chris Bryan using the Phantom HD Gold camera. To see more of Chris’ work check out his website. WWW.CHRISBRYANFILMS.COM

The Nike Dunk NG Golf Shoe

I’m a diehard golfer and one thing that still lacks in the sport is any cool golf apparel. I couldn’t tell you if these are more for just for looks than having the latest in golf shoe technology. But they def blend the sport and social lines.  The Nike Dunk NG comes with two sets of shoelaces, allowing athletes to either accentuate the bright color of the shoe or to opt for traditional white.  With full-grain waterproof leather, the Nike Dunk NG can battle the elements of poor weather conditions.  The Scorpion Stinger Spikes ensure that traction is not an issue for the Nike Dunk NG.
