Objectified Documentary

Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability.

Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?

Read director Gary Hustwit’s post about the filmObjectified is the second part of a three-film “design trilogy” by Gary Hustwit, details on the third film will be released soon.

Objectified had its world premiere at the SxSW Film Festival in March 2009, and is currently screening at film festivals, cinemas, and special events worldwide. The film will be available as a DVD and download soon. Join our mailing list or subscribe to our RSS feed to stay informed of new announcements.

Bape + Star Wars Release

Every week I get a call or Facebook message from my uncle back in Australia with a list of new Bape gear about to be release that coming Saturday. Lucky for me I have few good mates who work at the store in Causeway Bay, so a quick phone call and the gear is put aside for me and no lining up out the front of the store. On this occasion with the release of a collaboration with Star Wars on a number of different apparel. Bape went all out with an appearance from a few of the Star Wars characters including Darth Vader. So of course being a Star Wars fan and a geek streak running through me. I had to get a photo.

B&O BeoVision 12-65 plasma TV and BeoLab 12 speakers debut

Bang & Olufsen has launched a new 65-inch plasma TV, the B&O BeoVision 12-65, along with a set of minimalist wall-mounted speakers, the B&O BeoLab 12. The BeoVision 12-65 uses an ultra slim NeoPDP panel and some clever optical trickery consisting of flexed metal strips to make the set look even narrower; it runs at Full HD, and has an integrated center-channel speaker for use with surround sound setups.

Inside is a 4 x 80W ICEpower amp for the midrange and 1 x 40W for the treble, along with an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust screen brightness. Interestingly, there’s no other mounting option beyond on the wall: B&O has even integrated the mount into the plasma set itself.

As for the BeoLab 12 speakers, they use B&O’s own Acoustic Lens Technology to project sound 180-degrees. They use a 3/4-inch Acoustic Lens for the treble, a 2-inch midrange and two 6.5-inch flat CosCone woofers for the lower frequencies, angled in towardsthe wall. There’s also a 2-inch aluminum cone to help the Acoustic Lens system do its magic.

An ICEpower class D amp provides a total of 480W – twin 160W for the bass, 80W for the mids and 80W for the treble – and the system can adapt to the room, the wall and, indeed, whether you place the BeoLab 12′s with the cones at the top or the bottom.

No word on pricing, but the BeoVision 12-65 will arrive in March and the BeoLab 12 speakers in the spring. Expect them both to be expensive.

The snow church of Mitterfirmiansreut, Germany

A church made entirely of ice and snow that was built at the end of December 2011 in in Mitterfirmiansreut, Germany, hearkens back to a century-old tradition. Back in the winter of 1910, the townfolk of Mitterfirmiansreut were unable to visit their local church due to a heavy snowstorm. In 1911, the same townfolk decided to build a church out of the most readily available building material they had at their disposal – snow and ice. The new snow church is expected to stand firm for another month before it begins to melt but in the meantime, it welcomes locals and visitors who wish to pray inside an ice cold house of worship.

Apple iPad 3 Leaked Details

TechCrunch Article –

You’ve just got to love the timing. First, Apple announces their education-focused media event smack dab in the middle of CES. Now, just as CES is winding down, Bloomberg has “three people familiar with the product” spilling purported details on the next iPad. Whether or not Apple won CES without even being there, they’re certainly trying.

None of the leaked details are particularly new, but that it comes from Bloomberg and they’ve seemingly got full confidence in their source(s) makes them a bit more credible than rumors prior.

Here’s the gist of it:

  • The next iPad (Bloomberg calls it “iPad 3″, though even that detail is of course unconfirmed) is said to have gone into production this month, with production ramping up until February, with a launch in March.
  • It’ll have a quad-core CPU (as opposed to the dual-core A5 found in iPad 2)
  • It’ll have a “high-def” screen
  • Support for LTE (4G)

The most curious bit? The use of the phrase “high-def” instead of “Retina” with regards to the display. If Apple was throwing around the “Retina” term internally, at least one of Bloomberg’s three sources presumably would’ve thought to mention it. If the sources mentioned it, Bloomberg would have squeezed it into the article somewhere — and they didn’t. With leaks like this, what’s not said can be as important as what is. Higher-res screen? Yes. But the absurdly high-resolution that a “retina” iPad would require (something like 2560 x 1920, higher than any monitor Apple has ever made regardless of size)? Probably not.

Treehotel – Sweden

Years ago, when researching an article we published on amazing tree houses, we discovered some concept renderings for a mirror cube treehouse in Sweden.  Years later, the cube finally exists as part of Treehotel, a collection of wildly imaginative tree houses in Harads, Sweden.  The Mirror Cube, designed by Martin Videgard and Bolle Tham, is perched high in the trees overlooking a valley forest below.  Its exterior is entirely lined with mirrors, appearing like a floating reflective cube amidst the pine trees.  Its interior is surprisingly spacious, with a floor-level bed and a loft above.
