A Tribe Called Quest is one of my favorite groups of all time… in any genre of music. After seeing Michael Rapaport’s amazing documentary on the group, I felt inspired to put together a mix and this is the end result. This is NOT a greatest hits mix. This mix is for the true Tribe fans only… the die-hards who know every lyric and remember every interlude. I thought it would be cool to basically create the “lost” Tribe album… with all the rare songs, demos, limited-edition remixes, and collaborations you may have missed over the years. I hope when you enjoy this as much as I do, and hear some things you have never heard before. Special thank you toUNDRCRWN for the amazing artwork. Long live A Tribe Called Quest!

A day in the life of DJ Mick Boogie…

Mick Boogie is one of my favourite DJs and always does killer mixtapes. Read his story of how he and fellow DJ Jus Ske had the privilege to spin at the top secret after party for Jay-Z and Kanye’s new album ‘Watch The Throne’ –

Sometimes life as a deejay is amazing.  Sometimes life as a deejay is repetitive and monotonous, like any career.  Last night fell into the first category.  I got a call from my 4AM homie Jus Ske like “stop what you are doing and meet me at The Darby.”  I finished up what I was working on and headed over there… and what a night.

We ended up deejaying the top-secret afterparty for Jay-Z and Kanye’s exclusive “Watch The Throne” VIP listening event and it was amazing.  A who’s who of pop culture in 2011 was in this room… Jay, Kanye, Nas, A-Trak, Khaled, 88-Keys and more.  And everyone was partying to the soundtrack we provided.  The best thing about playing for a room of music insiders is you can just play from the heart, and not worry about throwing in silly top-40 girl anthems.  And that’s exactly what we did.

Jus started off with a great set of Jay-Z rarities and Jay/Nas collabos (“Success!”) and Jay was sitting in the corner bobbing his head, rapping with all the songs.  The highlight for me was when he played Biggie’s “Realms Of Junior Mafia” and Jay went nuts.

Then it was my turn… as I got on, Kanye jumped up on a couch and took control of the room so I intro’d with “Dark Fantasy” and so we began.  After running thru my favorite Kanye hits and album tracks… (my favorite: “Thru The Wire” – his favorite: “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”) it was time for the big moment: “Otis.”  I swear, we must have stopped and restarted that song about 5 times and Jay and Kanye enjoyed the crowd mouthing every word to their new classic.

After that, I was able to dig a little deeper, playing some remixes from my Viva La Hova project, some old Kanye/Jay blends I had in the stash (Jay’s face when I mixed “Heart Of The City” over “We Major” was priceless), and even some live Jay-Z “Unplugged” audio.

The personal highlight for me was when I played “Big Brother” and Kanye basically rapped the entire thing with Jay right there.  Seemed like a perfect way to end a night celebrating a momentous album from the two most talented people in hip-hop right now. All in all, an amazing night.

Nigel Sylvester + Casio G-Shock GD100NS-7: Launch Party Event

Street style BMX rider Nigel Sylvester launched his signature Casio G-Shock timepiece, the GD100NS-7, and officially joined the Casio action sports roster. Hosted by Nigel’s “Big Brother” DJ Clark Kent and dear friend “Hawaii” Mike Salman partied at penthouse suite of The Hotel on Rivington, from , Mel D Cole (Village Slum), Dee & Ricky, DJ Soul, Billionaire Boys Club, L.R.G., Nike Sportswear, AM PM New York, Mishka, ALIFE, and etc…  Even Pharrell made an appearance.

HK Urban Terrain

I love riding my fixie in Australia but unfortunately Hong Kong isn’t the best town for fixies. All the hills and the roads and footpaths are so dodgy. Not to mention the 24 hour traffic of cars, trams, buses and people. So I recently took up Mountain Bike riding. There’s a huge MB community in HK but most of the spots take a bit of planning to organise a mini van or ferry to get to the tracks. That sucks for me because I never know when I’m going to have some free time, so instead I’ve taken the challenge to find some urban terrain around the city. I’m still getting my head around all the gears and weight distribution when going down stairs and off drops, but it’s f#ckin’ fun! I love any sport with an element of danger and gets the adrenaline going. Here’s a few pics burning around central.

The Flake

The Flake, Da Feng’s latest design, is covered in hinged carbon-fiber pieces. Each one is connected by carbon nanotubes to tiny solenoids that can make them stand up or lay flat, like an angry cat puffing up its fur. Each “flake”, is made of carbon fiber, and can go from perfectly flat and streamlined to standing up nearly vertically. So if you want to go fast, all the flakes lie flat, but when you turn, all the flakes on one side of the car will stand up, helping lock the car down to the road. The Flake car, its wheels are made out of twelve independently extendable leg-things, allowing for an adjustable contact surface. Their 12 “legs” extend and contract in response to the road surface and vehicle speed, the bottom part of the “wheel” flattens at high speeds, turning the circle into a D-shape, so Feng calls them D-wheels.

The Antics Roadshow Produced by Banksy

With the current riots in the UK right now. Why does it now surprise me that Banksy is airing an hour-long special ‘The Antics Roadshow’ August 13th on Channel 4. For all those OS you can see it broadcast on 4oD. Contributors include Michael Fagan talking about breaking into the Queen’s bedroom: ‘I looked into her eyes, they were dark’; and Noel Godin, who pioneered attacking celebrities with custard pies: ‘Instead of a bullet I give them a cake’. The program will also include the first interview with the man responsible for the absurd turfhead Winston Chruchill stunt.

Spike Jonez was called in to direct the first film clip off the new album. Only these two dudes could chop up a Maybach and turn it into a Mad Max style ride.

Apple iPhone 5 Rendering

Could the rumours be true?! Could this be the next iPhone 5? There’s a few nice improvements to it including the width and reduced thickness.

Chinese manufacturers seem to be fairly confident with a set of recently leaked Apple iPhone 5 designs, as they’ve already started producing cases based on that document. In turn, Mac Rumors commissioned CiccareseDesign to create high quality iPhone 5 renderings made as closely as possible to the leaked case designs.

Speculation lead to a more oval shaped home button, a 4 inch screen, tapered edges on the back in aluminum (rather than glass as on the iPhone 4). “The final dimensions of the new design are calculated to be: 4.33″ x 2.36″ and .27″ thickness at the top and .21″ at the bottom In comparison, the iPhone 4 dimensions are: 4.5″ x 2.31″ x .37″. So the new design is actually shorter than the existing iPhone 4, but slightly wider and thinner.”

The iPhone 5 is expected to be released in September or October of this year.
