Ghostface Killah’s Gritty RZA-Produced Comic Book: Twelve Reasons to Die

12ReasonsToDie-coverB_600px
12reasons

Spin –

Ghostface Killah’s Twelve Reasons to Die isn’t just a promising new album powered by the searing soul production of Adrian Younge. It’s also a comic book about “one vengeful soul hunting the 12 most powerful crime lords in the world,” and the list of guest artists is fiercely impressive: Jim Mahfood (Tank Girl), Paolo Rivera (Daredevil), Ramon Perez (Wolverine & The X-Men), Riley Rossmo (Bedlam), Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash), and Kyle Strahm (Haunt), among others, plus 30 Days of Night‘s Christopher Mitten on the cover of Issue 1.

That debut entry in the six-part series hits stands May 29 courtesy of Black Mask Studios, a new publisher co-founded by Epitaph boss and Bad Religion O.G. Brett Gurewitz. The RZA is credited as the book’s producer, and his own Soul Temple Records will release the album on April 16. We’ve heard the excellent tracks “The Rise of the Ghostface Killah” and “The Sure Shot (Parts 1 and 2).” Now we have an opportunity to preview the comic via the trailer above, which promises, “Guns, sex, vinyl [and] revenge,” against a backdrop of grit.

Maya gives a thumbs up from a Portuguese hospital bed. “My dear friends, a broken ankle. Nothing more… Some salt water, but you know! I just need some prayer for a speedy recovery!!! Love u all,” she says. Check the video of her rescue below…really scary stuff.

How Steve Jobs hired Norman Foster: “Hi Norman. I need some help”

apple_foster_dezeen

Dezeen Article –

Architect Norman Foster has revealed how late Apple CEO Steve Jobs called him “out of the blue” in 2009 to invite him to design the Apple Campus 2 with the words “Hi Norman, I need some help.”

“For me this project started in the summer of 2009,” says Foster in a movie published this week by Cupertino City Council. “Out of the blue a telephone call. It’s Steve: ‘Hi Norman, I need some help.’ I was out there three weeks later.”

The movie documents a planning meeting held in the city on 1 October, at which representatives of Apple, Foster + Partners and others presented details of the $5 billion project to create a new home for Apple in Cupertino. The building was granted planning permission last week.

Foster says in the movie: “One of the most memorable things and perhaps vital to the project was Steve saying, ‘Don’t think of me as your client. Think of me as one of your team’.”

The architect adds: “The first point of reference I think for Steve was the campus at Stanford, his home territory. And also the landscape he grew up with; the fruitbowl of America.”

Elsewhere in the movie, members of the project team give details of the ring-shaped, 280 million square-foot building, which will have one of the largest photovoltaic solar arrays in the world and feature a parking garage for electric cars with over 100 charging stations.

“We have a building that is pushing social behaviour in the way people work,” adds Stephen Behling, an architect at Foster + Partners, while Dan Whisenhunt, Apple’s senior director of real estate & facilities, says the building will be “one of the most environmentally sustainable projects on this scale in the world, creating a new home for 13,000 employees.”

Whisenhunt adds that Apple would “like to keep engineering and creative groups together on our new site,” referring to the company’s recent moves to integrate the previously separate design and technology departments.

Apple Campus 2 by Foster + Partners

“When Apple Campus 2 is finished 80% of the site will be green space” says Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environmental initiatives. “We’re maximising the natural assets of the area; this area has a great climate so 75% of the year we won’t need air conditioning or heating, we’ll have natural ventilation.”

She adds: “AC2 will run on 100% renewable energy, there will be solar power, it will be one of the largest solar arrays in the world for a corporate campus. Our goal is to build a campus that has no net increase in greenhouse gas emissions.”

“This building allows us to put 13,000 engineering and creative types in one location under one roof thus creating the idea factory that will create future generations of Apple products food years to come,” adds Whisenhunt. “The parking station will be fitted with over 100 vehicle charging parking stations, there are provisions to increase that as our employees purchase more electric cars.

Construction will start soon and will take 32 months. Apple staff will be able to move into the building in 2016.

Nokia Lumia 1020: Paul Trillo’s ‘NY 41×41’ Infinite Zoom Technique

0paultrillony41x41

This summer our Managing Editor Ray put a Nokia Lumia 928 to good use, capturing a nighttime bike race in Brooklyn. More recently, NYC-based filmmaker Paul Trillo got his hands on a Lumia 1020—that’s the 41-megapixel bad boy—and also shot New York at night, with a different goal in mind.

To exploit the 1020’s insane megapixel count, Trillo combined careful planning with some software kung fu to create a sort of “infinite zoom” effect, by stitching together shots of Broadway (spanning 41 blocks, or roughly two miles) with the same one-point perspective. The finished vid is called NY 41×41:

“What’s useful about having all that extra [megapixel count] wiggle room, is it allows you to re-crop your photos,” Trillo told NoFilmSchool. “Lose the extra head room, rotate and level out your horizon line.”

A Little Bit Eternal: Rick Owens and Michele Lamy

AnOther Magazine –

Rick Owens first met his wife, Michele Lamy, more than twenty years ago when he was employed as a pattern maker in the design company she owned and ran in Los Angeles. In 2008, in a definitive New Yorker profile, he described her as “a mesmerising sphinx. I’m so fascinated by someone who acts completely on instinct and feelings, where I’m so pragmatic and sensible and kind of, compared to her, boring and conservative.” Such things are relative, clearly.

In 2003, and by that point heading up the successful Rick Owens label, the pair migrated to a five-storey mansion in the Seventh Arrondissement of Paris where they now live and work. “It was kind of like, wow, I never expected this to happen, but here we are, this demands something special,” Owens once said of the move.

The “something special” in question took the form first of a series of life-size waxworks, originally conceived by Owens and created by Madame Tussauds (“when he reaches a level of stature, a man has his portrait commissioned to go over the fireplace”), and the introduction of fine furniture to his oeuvre. This is exhibited and sold on a commission-only basis and fills the couple’s living space also. Owens comes up with the initial designs, while Lamy is responsible for their execution, liaising with the many specialists involved.

“It’s kind of like asking a fascist and a gypsy to organise a war together,” says the designer, deadpan. “She’s just so generous and so flexible with deadlines and I’m not. She likes the complexity and eccentricity of working with artisans and I don’t always have the patience for that. The furniture is customised, esoteric, involves rare materials. She loves that.”

Here meanwhile, in this intimate film portrait by Danielle Levitt, is how Owens sums up his aesthetic: “I like classicism. I like historic reference. I like if there is something new with something almost ancient.”

The intrepid Dave Wassel talks about the act behind his spread in the October Issue of SURFING Magazine. “I knew for a fact that I could have made that wave… I had done five giant pumps to get to that point and all I needed was one more to high-line over the foam ball.”

Kanye West. Zane Lowe Interview BBC Radio 1

Screen-Shot-2013-09-23-at-5.24.45-PM

Part four coming in the next few days.

Kanye West interview with Zane Lowe from BBC Radio 1.

After the mixed reviews of Kanye’s latest album. This is a great interview to get more insight into his thinking behind the album and previous albums and even though I’m not the biggest fan of the album Yeezus. It’s given me much more appreciation for it and you have to admire his passion and confidence for everything he does.

Nymi by Bionym

img-band-stack Bionym_Nymi_black_top__3_ nexusae0_Nymi1_thumb bionym-nymi

Business Insider Article –

Toronto-based startup Bionym launched a wristband that will unlock your devices based on your heartbeat.

Heartbeats, like fingerprints, are unique to every individual. But Bionym thinks lifting a finger is too labor intensive. Instead, your device should know who you are automatically.

Wear the wristband, called Nymi, and an embedded electrocardiogram sensor recognizes your heartwaves and auto-authenticates all of your devices.  No more memorizing passwords because you are the password.

The wristband just launched for pre-order at $79 (though the price will jump to $99 after the first 25,000 devices get snatched up).

Nymi also touts both a proximity sensor and a motion detector, and its promotional video explores the realm of possibilities: you could pop your car’s trunk with the flick of a wrist, pay for coffee without reaching for your wallet, or open hotel room doors simply by standing in front of them.

“We don’t view this as just a product to unlock your devices, smartphones, etc.,” CEO Karl Martin told TechCrunch. “Those are security applications. We’re looking beyond that to smart environments. How do we enable hyper-personalized experience?”

Bionym was founded in 2011 and recently raised a $1.4 million seed round of financing.

Nymi promises to open source its API, so the possibilities, from gaming to banking, could as vast as developer creativity.  What remains to be seen, however, is if anyone will actually want to wear one.

moonbot-chipotle-2 chicken-500x333 city-500x333 peer-500x333

MOONBOT studios Office Tour from Moonbot Studios on Vimeo.

Created in collaboration with Chipotle Mexican Grill, “The Scarecrow” is an arcade-style adventure game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and a companion animated short film. Both pieces depict a scarecrow’s journey to bring wholesome food back to the people by providing an alternative to the processed food that dominates his world. The film’s soundtrack is a re-interpretation of “Pure Imagination,” performed by Fiona Apple.

The film is set in a dystopian fantasy world where all food production is controlled by a fictional industrial giant Crow Foods. Scarecrows have been displaced from their traditional role of protecting food and are now servants to the crows and their evil plans to dominate the food system. Dreaming of something better, a lone scarecrow sets out to provide an alternative to the unsustainable processed food from the factory. In the game, players will accompany the Scarecrow on his journey through four levels and deliver fresh food to the City of Plenty’s citizens.

The Shadow Conspiracy is pleased to announce the release of the The Hundreds X The Shadow Conspiracy collection, available at The Hundreds’ flagship locations (THLA, THSF, THNY and THSM) and authorized stockists on Thursday, September 19th, 2013. The line will also be available through the The Hundreds Online Shop beginning Monday, September 23rd, 2013.

“We all wanted to do a project that was more than just some decals placed on a stock BMX bike. This is why we choose to create a custom made Shadow frame that is limited to just this project and will never be produced again. We choose to do a 20″ BMX bike rather than a 24″ or 26″ as this represents true BMX and we didn’t want this project to be a toy, this bike can be taken out of the box and is ready to shred by a top rider or a causal fan, but its for sure a real machine for BMX. This is a important point as this shows the craftsmanship ship, love and attention to detail put into this project.” -Ron Bonner, The Shadow Conspiracy

The limited edition The Hundreds X The Shadow Conspiracy collection encompasses a custom designed 20″ Shadow BMX bike, an accompanying 13-piece bicycle Shadow multi tool, a vintage-inspired BMX jersey, and a dual-branded graphic tee and a snapback paying homage to this long-anticipated collaboration that’s been a decade in the works. The capsule is a meld of classic and contemporary BMX culture, Hot rod culture, with high end craftsmanship.
